India is on the brink of a revolution in electric mobility, with 2025 expected to be a pivotal year for electric vehicles (EVs). The country's EV market is poised for explosive growth, largely driven by the growing demand for electric SUVs across various price segments. With an increasing focus on clean mobility, reducing pollution, and addressing fuel import costs, automakers are pushing forward with major launches, which will dominate the Indian automotive landscape in 2025.
Leading the charge in this transition are major players such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BYD, all of whom are planning significant EV rollouts. Industry reports suggest that even Tesla, known for its premium electric vehicles, may consider entering the Indian market with imported models. This strong momentum is further bolstered by the Indian government’s push for clean mobility initiatives, aiming to curb pollution and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
Stricter emission norms imposed by the government, along with potential penalties for non-compliance, are accelerating the shift toward electric vehicles in India. While petrol, diesel, hybrid, and CNG-powered vehicles will continue to be launched, electric vehicles are expected to take centre stage in 2025. This trend reflects a growing consumer awareness of the environmental impact of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, and a shift towards more sustainable transportation options.
The excitement surrounding EV launches will be kicked off by the Bharat Mobility Auto Show in mid-January 2025, where several automakers will unveil their upcoming electric vehicle models. Maruti Suzuki, for instance, is set to debut its first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the eVitara, which will offer an impressive 500 km range and is expected to be priced above Rs. 15 lakh (approximately US$ 17,490.84). This is expected to be a game-changer in the mid-range EV segment in India.
Hyundai is also jumping on the electric bandwagon, with plans to launch the much-awaited Creta EV. The Creta has long been a favorite among Indian SUV enthusiasts, and its electric version is expected to turn heads in the market.
On the premium EV front, Tata Motors plans to introduce electric versions of its popular models, including the Sierra, Harrier, and Safari. These models, priced above Rs. 20 lakh (around US$ 23,321.12), will provide options for consumers looking for luxury electric SUVs that combine advanced technology with the comfort and performance of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Mercedes will also showcase the G580 Electric G, while BYD’s Bao 3 is expected to make its entry into the Indian market as a high-end EV option.
Audi’s Q6 e-tron SUV and RS e-tron GT, along with Skoda’s Enyaq, will further solidify the growing demand for premium electric vehicles in India. These vehicles are not just about offering an electric drivetrain, but also the performance, luxury, and advanced features that these brands are known for. For the luxury segment, Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch the CLE53 AMG, while Audi will unveil the RSQ8 SUV, showcasing the versatility and performance of EVs in the luxury category.
Apart from electric vehicles, petrol and hybrid models will continue to enter the market. Kia’s Syros SUV, Nissan’s Patrol, and BYD’s Denza N9 hybrid will add variety to the lineup. The continued launch of hybrid and CNG vehicles will cater to consumers who are gradually making the transition to electric mobility but are still exploring a multi-fuel approach for flexibility.
2025 will undoubtedly see a diverse range of electric vehicles catering to different segments of the market. From affordable mass-market models to premium luxury options, EVs are expected to be the centerpiece of India’s automotive landscape. The availability of these vehicles will not only cater to the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions but also help in further reducing India’s carbon footprint.
As the Indian government continues to support this transformation through incentives for EV buyers and manufacturers, along with infrastructure development such as EV charging stations, the country’s electric mobility journey is on track for major milestones. The auto industry’s aggressive push to roll out new models will help India meet its climate goals and transition to a more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
