Thiruvananthapuram, March 3, 2025 – A 47-year-old Indian man, Ani Thomas Gabriel, from Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was shot dead by Jordanian security forces while trying to illegally cross the Israel border. The incident occurred on February 10, and the Indian Embassy in Amman informed his family about his tragic death via email.
Family Learns About Death Through Embassy Letter
Gabriel’s family was initially unaware of his travel to Jordan. He had told them he was visiting Velankanni, a Christian pilgrimage site in Tamil Nadu, when he left home on February 5. However, it was only after Edison, a survivor of the shooting, returned home injured, that the family learned of Gabriel’s presence in Jordan.
Gabriel’s relative Metilda told the media, "We received an email from the Indian Embassy about his death, but there has been no further communication after that."
The Fatal Attempt to Cross the Israel Border
According to TV reports, Gabriel was part of a four-member group that had traveled to Jordan on a three-month visit visa. They allegedly attempted to cross the Jordan-Israel border with the help of an agent.
However, as they reached the border, the Jordanian army intercepted them. The group attempted to flee, but Jordanian soldiers opened fire, killing Gabriel on the spot with a gunshot to the head.
Edison, who sustained a leg injury, was taken to a Jordanian military hospital for treatment. After recovering, he was repatriated to India and shared details of the incident with Gabriel’s family.
Indian Embassy Assisting in Repatriation of Mortal Remains
Following confirmation of Gabriel’s death, the Indian Embassy in Jordan issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter):
"The Embassy has learnt of the sad demise of an Indian national in unfortunate circumstances. The Embassy is in touch with the family of the deceased and is working closely with Jordanian authorities for transportation of mortal remains of the deceased."
Who Was Ani Thomas Gabriel?
Gabriel is survived by his wife, Christeena, who is now awaiting further updates on the return of his body. The Indian government is coordinating with Jordanian authorities to ensure his mortal remains are brought back to India at the earliest.
Ongoing Investigation and Diplomatic Efforts
The incident raises concerns over illegal border crossings and human trafficking networks that lure individuals into such dangerous attempts. The Jordan-Israel border is heavily guarded, and illegal crossings are met with strict military action.
Indian authorities are now looking into who facilitated Gabriel’s illegal journey, and efforts are underway to investigate the role of the agent involved.
