A Microsoft study has revealed that India has emerged as a leader in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with 65% of surveyed Indians reporting that they have used AI tools. This rate is more than double the global average of just 31%. The Global Online Safety Survey, conducted between July 19 and August 9, 2024, included participants from 15 countries and 15,000 respondents (teenagers and adults), shedding light on the widespread adoption of AI in India.
Key Areas of AI Usage in India
The study highlighted several areas where AI has become an integral part of everyday life for Indians, including:
- Translations
- Answering queries
- Enhancing workplace efficiency
- Assisting students
These AI-powered tasks have gained popularity due to their accessibility and ability to streamline both professional and personal activities.
Millennials Are Leading the Way in AI Usage
Millennials (ages 25-44) are the most active users of AI in India, with an impressive 84% reporting using AI technologies for various tasks. This demographic group is benefiting from AI in numerous ways, including improving workplace efficiency and educational assistance, showing a strong preference for adopting new technologies.
Growing Digital Awareness Among Indian Parents
In addition to the rapid AI adoption, the survey also revealed that Indian parents are becoming more aware of the digital challenges their children face. Compared to the previous year, there has been an uptick in parental awareness and concern regarding their children’s online safety, especially considering the rise in AI-related risks.
Concerns About AI Risks Persist
Despite the rapid adoption of AI in India, the survey found that significant concerns persist regarding its potential risks, especially in the realm of online abuse, deepfakes, scams, and AI hallucinations. These risks have raised alarms globally, and India is no exception.
In fact, over 80% of respondents expressed concern about the impact of AI on children under 18, acknowledging the potential dangers that AI tools can pose, particularly when it comes to online harassment and misinformation. The same percentage of Indian teenagers reported facing various online risks in the past year, highlighting the growing need for better regulation and safety measures.
Balancing AI’s Benefits with Safety Measures
As India continues to lead the charge in AI adoption, there is a growing need to strike a balance between harnessing AI’s benefits and ensuring adequate safety protocols. The government, tech companies, and educators will need to collaborate to ensure that AI is used responsibly, especially among younger populations.
The report underscores that as AI usage increases, it’s essential for Indian society to address the challenges posed by the technology, particularly in the online safety domain.
