With the Delhi Assembly elections just around the corner, Arvind Kejriwal led the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to release its election manifesto in a press conference on Wednesday. The manifesto focuses primarily on addressing the concerns of middle-class families in Delhi. This strategic move aligns with the party’s goal of offering support to this important demographic, which has been a significant voter base for AAP over the years. This year, AAP's proposals are designed to make a tangible difference in the lives of the city’s middle class, promoting welfare and economic prosperity for the people of Delhi.
The manifesto was released just a day after the BJP introduced its second set of promises for the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections. BJP’s Sankalp Patra Part 2, launched by BJP Lok Sabha MP Anurag Thakur, lays out several initiatives targeting key voter groups. The manifesto promises free education from KG to PG for students in government-run educational institutions, providing a major boost to the education sector in Delhi. Additionally, BJP’s vision extends to the welfare of auto rickshaw drivers and domestic workers by forming a welfare board and ensuring life insurance for them.
BJP has also taken a firm stand on corruption, proposing the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged corruption during AAP's tenure. This move aims to build trust among voters by committing to zero tolerance on corruption. BJP MP Anurag Thakur emphasized that the Modi government’s policies have significantly minimized middlemen and brought about welfare changes through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.
Meanwhile, AAP's manifesto, while focusing on middle-class welfare, has faced some criticism from BJP leaders. Thakur alleged that AAP is sheltering Rohingya Muslims and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Delhi, although no concrete evidence has been provided to back these claims. AAP's manifesto also pledges to improve Delhi's infrastructure and services, although much of its success hinges on continued governance and public perception.
Moreover, BJP's manifesto pledges financial assistance to youth preparing for competitive exams. The Sankalp Patra also extends a special stipend of Rs 1,000 per month for Scheduled Caste students in technical and professional courses under the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Stipend Scheme, a significant step towards supporting marginalized communities. The party also proposes to expand the PM SVANidhi scheme for street vendors, offering collateral-free loans, thus empowering the entrepreneurial spirit in Delhi's informal sector.
For women’s empowerment, BJP has included major welfare schemes, including financial assistance for pregnant women under the Matritva Suraksha Yojana and Rs 2,500 per month for women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana. BJP’s healthcare initiatives also aim to enhance the healthcare infrastructure in Delhi, particularly for senior citizens, marking the party's focus on the welfare of vulnerable sections of society.
The battle for Delhi’s 70 assembly seats is heating up as voters prepare to decide between the promises of AAP and BJP. The Delhi Assembly Election will take place on February 5, with the counting of votes set for February 8, 2025.
