With the Bihar Assembly elections approaching, the political landscape in the state is intensifying. In a move that may significantly impact the election dynamics, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made it abundantly clear that it will contest all 243 seats independently, refusing to align with any other party.

AAP Declares Full-Fledged Solo Contest

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh, while addressing the media in Patna, delivered a strong and clear message. He said that after detailed discussions with the party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the Bihar unit committee, the decision was taken to contest elections without forming any alliance, even with national parties like the Congress.

This marks a strategic shift for AAP, which has often experimented with coalition politics in other states. Singh also touched upon issues concerning Bihari migrants in Delhi, criticising the demolition of slum areas and urging the Bihar Chief Minister to ask Prime Minister Modi to uphold promises like ‘Jahan jhuggi, wahin makaan’ made to the poor.

Saurabh Bhardwaj Reiterates Solo Strategy

Supporting Singh’s statement, Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bhardwaj echoed the decision during a media interaction with ANI. Bhardwaj reaffirmed that AAP would contest every seat in Bihar and dismissed any speculation about coalition strategies, confirming the party’s commitment to an independent electoral pathway.

This firm stance by both central and local AAP leaders indicates the party’s ambition to expand its influence beyond Delhi and Punjab, marking Bihar as a significant next target in its national journey.

Chirag Paswan’s Entry Complicates NDA Dynamics

In parallel developments, Chirag Paswan, Union Minister and leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), declared that he would contest all 243 seats in alliance with the NDA. Speaking at a rally in Arrah, Paswan asserted his commitment to the NDA, but introduced a twist by demanding 40 seats for his party.

Citing his party’s 100 per cent strike rate in the last Lok Sabha elections, Paswan made a strong case for a larger share in the upcoming assembly elections, which has sparked a debate within the NDA coalition.

This demand has reportedly caused unease among other NDA allies, especially the BJP, which is trying to carefully balance its coalition partners while maintaining control over the larger alliance.

NDA and Mahagathbandhan: The Emerging Battle Lines

As the BJP-led NDA continues to hold rallies and prepare for a rigorous campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains an active face in the campaign, addressing gatherings and highlighting the development agenda in Bihar.

On the opposition front, the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) led by Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD is also preparing for a tough battle. The Grand Alliance is expected to include the Congress, Left parties, and others, aiming to unite anti-NDA forces under one umbrella.

However, AAP’s refusal to join hands with any of these groups may fracture the opposition vote, especially if the party manages to mobilise urban and youth voters disillusioned with the traditional political players.

AAP’s Bihar Strategy: Ground-Level Preparation Begins

AAP’s move is not just symbolic. The party is reportedly working on booth-level organisation, candidate selection, and regional alliances within the civil society to prepare for the big contest.

Sources suggest that AAP’s Bihar unit has been mobilising volunteers, conducting door-to-door campaigns, and using its Delhi governance model as a benchmark to reach voters.

This approach aims to replicate the party’s success in Delhi—with a focus on education, healthcare, electricity, and water—to attract Bihar’s urban poor, youth, and migrant populations.

A Crowded Political Space

With NDA’s traditional alliance, Mahagathbandhan’s revival efforts, and AAP’s entry into the field, Bihar is looking at a multi-cornered contest. This fragmentation could make vote share management a crucial factor, especially in close contests.

Historically, Bihar elections have seen tight margins and caste-driven politics, and the emergence of AAP as a third pole in multiple constituencies could impact the final outcomes in unpredictable ways.

Challenges Ahead for AAP

Despite its ambitious stance, AAP will have to overcome several challenges in Bihar:

  • Limited grassroots network in rural constituencies

  • Caste arithmetic and local alliances that dominate the political landscape

  • Strong incumbency of established parties like BJP, JD(U), RJD, and Congress

  • Resource constraints compared to larger national and regional parties

However, AAP has often positioned itself as an alternative force against corruption and misgovernance, which could help it tap into voter segments disillusioned with traditional parties.

Final Thoughts

As Bihar heads toward elections, the political temperature is rising fast. The AAP’s bold decision to go solo in all 243 seats reflects its confidence in its expanding footprint and its desire to build a national presence.

With Chirag Paswan asserting influence within NDA, and Mahagathbandhan consolidating opposition voices, the state is set for a vibrant, high-stakes election.

Whether AAP’s gamble pays off or not, its presence will undoubtedly shape the narrative of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. For voters, the emergence of a new political force offers more choice, new agendas, and increased competition—something that may lead to greater accountability and more responsive governance.
