Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, a Member of Parliament from the National Conference (NC), has announced plans for a protest outside the residence of Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The protest is centered around the issue of reservation in education, which Mehdi claims discriminates against students in the open merit category in the Union Territory. The Srinagar MP is voicing concerns over the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Rules of 2005, which were recently amended, leaving only 40% of seats for the open merit category. The amendments have sparked debate, as open merit students argue that exceeding a 50% reservation violates the Supreme Court’s 1992 ruling, which ensures that reservations should not exceed 50%, to guarantee equal opportunities for all.
Mehdi’s protest call comes after a month of mounting reactions following the formation of a Cabinet sub-committee by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration, intended to address the issue. In his social media post, Mehdi urged political players, particularly from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC), to step beyond political rhetoric and show genuine support for a rational reservation policy. Mehdi expressed that he would join the protest if the issue remained unresolved by December 22. His call for a peaceful and dignified demonstration aims to secure answers from the government.
The J&K Students Association, representing students from the open merit category, extended support for the protest, with a spokesperson reiterating the need for a rationalized reservation system that promotes social justice and equal opportunities. The ongoing debate over the reservation policy has become one of the most contentious political issues in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference, as part of its election manifesto, had committed to addressing the issue, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated his party’s stance, affirming that the sub-committee would consult stakeholders to resolve the matter.
