  • Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Ahmedabad plane crash, was discharged from hospital and later carried his brother's mortal remains for cremation.

  • His brother Ajay’s identity was confirmed through DNA testing, and the cremation took place in Diu with family members from the UK in attendance.

  • Vishwas, seated near the emergency exit, recounted how he escaped from the crashed Air India Dreamliner that fell on a hostel building.

In a tragic yet profoundly emotional development following the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the disaster, was discharged from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Tuesday evening (June 17, 2025). A day later, he travelled to his hometown Diu to attend the cremation of his brother Ajay, who perished in the same crash.

Sole Survivor Discharged from Hospital

According to Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British businessman from Leicester, was declared fit for discharge after stabilising from injuries sustained during the crash.

Vishwas’ family had already arrived from the UK. After his recovery, we discharged him at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and his brother’s mortal remains were handed over after a DNA confirmation,” Dr. Joshi said during a press briefing.

Emotional Cremation in Diu

Soon after his release, Vishwas carried his brother’s body to Diu, their hometown in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. In a poignant moment captured on social media, he was seen carrying the coffin on his shoulders, walking slowly towards the cremation ground accompanied by grieving family members.

Ajay's cremation took place on Wednesday morning, June 18, with local officials confirming Mr. Ramesh's presence at the ceremony.

Prime Minister Modi’s Visit

In a rare personal gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mr. Ramesh at the hospital on June 13, a day after the crash. PM Modi enquired about his recovery and reportedly offered emotional support to the lone survivor of the tragedy.

The Crash: What Happened?

The Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed just seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, at 1:39 p.m. on June 12, 2025. The aircraft was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport and carried 242 passengers and crew.

The plane lost control and crashed into the premises of a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad. Ajay Ramesh, Vishwas’s brother, was among the passengers who perished in the impact.

A Miraculous Escape

In an interview with Doordarshan, Vishwas recalled the terrifying moments leading up to the crash and how he managed to survive.

“The aircraft stalled within seconds of takeoff. I was in seat 11A, close to the emergency door,” he said.

He described the exact portion of the plane he was seated in falling onto the ground floor of the hostel premises. When he saw the broken emergency door, he realised it might be his only chance to survive.

“I don’t know how I came out alive,” he said emotionally. “I somehow dragged myself out and walked towards an ambulance.”

A viral video shot by locals shows Vishwas limping away from the wreckage, visibly injured but alert and responsive.
