The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize public healthcare services in India. As part of this initiative, AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh have been designated as Centres of Excellence for AI in healthcare. These institutions are at the forefront of developing and implementing AI-driven solutions to enhance disease diagnosis, treatment, and overall healthcare outcomes.

AI-Powered Healthcare Innovations

One of the key AI tools introduced is the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), which has been integrated into the eSanjeevani telemedicine platform. This AI-driven system assists doctors in diagnosing diseases more accurately by standardizing data capture. Since its implementation, CDSS has improved the quality of over 196 million patient consultations, aiding doctors with more than 12 million AI-powered diagnoses.

Another significant AI application is the Media Disease Surveillance (MDS) tool, incorporated into the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). MDS has generated over 4,500 event alerts since its launch in April 2022, allowing authorities to detect and prevent infectious disease outbreaks at an early stage.

AI for Tuberculosis (TB) Detection

In an effort to eliminate tuberculosis (TB), the MoHFW has introduced AI-powered solutions like the Cough Against TB AI model. This tool has helped increase TB detection rates by 12-16%, identifying cases that would have otherwise gone undiagnosed. Additionally, the Prediction of Adverse TB Outcomes AI solution has contributed to a 27% reduction in adverse TB cases, significantly improving patient recovery rates.

Enhancing Disease Prevention and Public Health

The adoption of AI in healthcare is not only improving individual patient outcomes but also strengthening India's public health infrastructure. AI models are being used for Diabetic Retinopathy Identification and Abnormal Chest X-ray Classification, helping in early detection and timely intervention of critical health conditions.

These AI-driven innovations are streamlining healthcare decision-making and allowing medical professionals to provide better, faster, and more efficient care. The integration of AI-powered disease surveillance tools is playing a crucial role in preventing potential health crises, ensuring that India's healthcare system is well-equipped to handle emerging challenges.
