-
Air India Express IX 375 returned to Calicut mid-air due to a cabin air conditioning malfunction, all passengers landed safely.
-
Authorities clarified it was a precautionary return, not an emergency landing; refreshments and care were provided to passengers.

A separate Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi reported an APU fire post-landing; all crew and passengers were unharmed.
In a precautionary aviation move, an Air India Express flight en route from Calicut (Kozhikode) to Doha had to return mid-air due to a technical glitch on July 23, 2025. Flight IX 375, carrying 188 people including passengers and crew, took off at 9:07 am IST, but encountered a malfunction in the aircraft’s cabin air conditioning system, prompting the decision to turn back. The flight safely landed at Calicut International Airport by 11:12 am, with no reported injuries or panic.
Airport officials swiftly confirmed that the return was not an emergency landing, but rather a proactive and safety-oriented decision in response to the technical fault. The situation was managed calmly, and standard aviation safety protocols were followed throughout.
An Air India Express spokesperson later clarified that an alternative aircraft was arranged for the affected passengers. Refreshments and assistance were provided to ensure minimal inconvenience. The spokesperson stated:
“One of our flights returned to Kozhikode due to a technical issue after take-off. A replacement aircraft was deployed on priority and all guests were offered refreshments. The flight later departed as rescheduled.”
The replacement flight was scheduled to leave by 1:30 pm, ensuring the continuation of travel plans with as little disruption as possible. According to airline sources, passenger comfort was a top priority, and efforts were made to manage the situation smoothly.
This incident follows another recent occurrence involving an Air India aircraft. On July 22, 2025, Air India flight AI 315 from Hong Kong to Delhi experienced a fire in the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) after it had safely landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The APU, typically located at the tail end of the aircraft, is responsible for powering essential systems when the main engines are off.
As per the airline's account, the fire started after the aircraft reached the gate and passengers had already begun disembarking. Fortunately, the safety mechanisms functioned correctly, and the APU automatically shut down to prevent escalation.
“All passengers and crew exited the aircraft safely, and there were no injuries reported,” confirmed the spokesperson.
The aircraft involved in the APU incident has now been grounded for a detailed technical inspection. Regulatory authorities have been notified, and a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
These two recent incidents — while independent and unrelated — have drawn attention to the importance of robust maintenance checks, prompt crew action, and transparency in safety communication.
Understanding the Technical Issues:
-
In the case of IX 375, the cabin air conditioning system, essential for maintaining comfortable air pressure and temperature, developed a fault. Although not life-threatening, malfunctions in this system can lead to discomfort or, in rare cases, risks if left unaddressed, particularly on long-haul flights.
-
The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in the AI 315 incident plays a critical support role in aircraft operations. A fire in the APU, even post-landing, can potentially escalate into a larger hazard if not properly mitigated. Fortunately, automated safety systems and trained crew response prevented further damage.
Public Confidence and Airline Response
Air India Express and its parent, Air India, have consistently emphasized their commitment to safety and passenger care. In both cases, the rapid response, safe evacuation procedures, and follow-up actions reflect adherence to global aviation safety norms.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to monitor the outcomes of the investigations closely and may issue guidelines or recommendations based on the findings.
These events, while minor in outcome, serve as critical reminders of the unpredictable nature of aviation operations. Modern aircraft are equipped with sophisticated technology and redundant systems, but routine maintenance, crew vigilance, and timely decision-making remain key to ensuring safety.
Industry Reactions
Aviation analysts have remarked that such technical returns and post-landing APU events are not uncommon in global aviation. However, openness in reporting, quick substitution of aircraft, and passenger service management play a major role in retaining public trust.
Experts believe that India’s aviation industry, especially with rising passenger numbers and expanding airline fleets, needs enhanced focus on technical training, system audits, and fleet maintenance investments.
Looking Ahead
Air India Express is one of India’s key players in the low-cost international aviation segment, and ensuring reliability is critical to its brand. Following its merger roadmap under Tata Group’s consolidation of Air India, Air India Express is expected to undergo fleet modernization and service enhancement. Such incidents, while unfortunate, are being seen as opportunities to evaluate and reinforce systems.
With increasing passenger volume and operational complexity, both public and private carriers in India are under growing pressure to ensure minimal service disruption and maximum safety transparency.
As investigations continue into the recent glitches, both Air India Express and Air India have reiterated that passenger well-being remains their top priority.
