Air India flight AI103 from Delhi to Washington was grounded in Vienna after a technical issue during routine maintenance at a scheduled fuel stop.
-
The onward journey to Washington was cancelled, and all disembarked passengers were rebooked or offered full refunds as per individual preferences.

The return flight AI104 from Washington to Delhi via Vienna was also cancelled due to the disruption, impacting many return passengers.
In a significant disruption for international air travellers, Air India flight AI103, operating on the Delhi-Washington DC route, was grounded in Vienna, Austria, on July 2, 2025, due to a maintenance issue discovered during a scheduled fuel stop. The issue, identified during routine aircraft inspections, resulted in the cancellation of the onward journey to Washington, causing inconvenience to passengers and disrupting the airline's transcontinental operations.
Routine Stop Turns Into Unexpected Disruption
Flight AI103 was on schedule and had planned a refueling halt in Vienna, as part of its regular operational route. However, during standard checks on the aircraft, the maintenance crew detected an issue that required urgent and extended attention. As the necessary repairs could not be completed within a short timeframe, Air India made the decision to cancel the continuation of the flight to Washington DC and disembarked all passengers in Vienna.
A statement from an Air India spokesperson confirmed the sequence of events:
"Flight AI103 from Delhi to Washington, DC on 2nd July made a planned fuel stop in Vienna. During routine aircraft checks, an extended maintenance task was identified, which required rectification before the next flight and, thus, additional time for completion. Due to this, the Vienna to Washington, DC leg was cancelled, and passengers were disembarked."
Rebooking and Refunds Offered to Passengers
Air India took immediate steps to accommodate the affected passengers, offering them alternative rebooking options on different flights to reach Delhi or Washington, depending on their location and travel plans. For those unwilling to wait or whose plans were significantly disrupted, the airline also extended the option of full refunds.
The airline spokesperson added:
“Affected passengers have been rebooked on alternative flights to Delhi or offered full refunds based on their preferences.”
The airline's refund and rebooking assistance desks were activated promptly at Vienna International Airport to support stranded passengers, some of whom were international travelers headed to the United States for business, tourism, or academic purposes.
Return Flight AI104 Also Cancelled
The impact of this disruption was not limited to just one leg of the journey. The return service, AI104, which was scheduled to operate from Washington DC to Delhi via Vienna, was also cancelled as a direct consequence of the grounded aircraft. This added to the number of affected travelers and posed logistical challenges for the airline, which is already grappling with increased international traffic during the summer travel season.
Many AI104 passengers had to make urgent rebooking arrangements, and Air India is believed to be in coordination with partner airlines and aviation authorities to facilitate their return to India at the earliest.
Rising Global Aviation Challenges
This incident highlights the complex operational dynamics of long-haul international flights, particularly those involving multiple legs, fuel stops, and tight maintenance protocols. While Air India has been investing in fleet modernization and safety enhancements, incidents like these underscore the unpredictability of aviation logistics.
In recent months, Air India has expanded its transatlantic routes under the Tata Group's ongoing transformation plan for the airline. However, aging aircraft and technical complications remain a challenge for carriers operating on ultra-long-haul routes like Delhi-Washington, which often require multi-stop fueling or technical layovers.
Passenger Reactions and Airline Response
Several passengers took to social media to express concerns about the delay and cancellations. While some praised the airline for handling the situation transparently and professionally, others expressed frustration over missed connections, visas, or planned events.
The airline's emergency customer response teams were activated to assist passengers with hotel accommodations, meal vouchers, and real-time updates, depending on eligibility and individual travel circumstances.
Air India, in its official communication, has emphasized that no passengers were left without support, and customer care teams are available 24x7 for assistance.
Looking Forward: Preventive Measures Expected
Aviation experts believe that while technical issues during stopovers are not uncommon, particularly in complex long-haul operations, robust pre-departure inspections and fleet rejuvenation are necessary to minimize such events in the future.
Air India has not confirmed the exact technical nature of the issue, but sources close to the matter suggest it may have involved mechanical systems or engine diagnostics, necessitating a longer-than-usual rectification period.
With increasing competition from other international carriers in the India-US corridor, such incidents could impact customer loyalty and operational metrics for Air India if not mitigated through enhanced pre-flight maintenance protocols and fleet modernization.
