Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), recently admitted that not all members of the Maharashtra Cabinet were satisfied with their assigned ministerial portfolios. This revelation came amid discussions on the challenges posed by the formation of a large cabinet following the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The cabinet currently comprises 42 ministers, including 36 cabinet ministers and just 6 ministers of state, sparking concerns over governance efficiency and whether the large number of ministers would impact the overall administrative effectiveness.
At a recent event in Baramati, Ajit Pawar remarked, "As the number of ministers is high, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had to give each minister a portfolio. Obviously, some are happy and some are not." This comment reflects the difficulty of managing a cabinet of such size, which raises questions about how well ministers can manage their portfolios effectively while balancing the needs of their constituencies and the state.
The discussions about the Maharashtra cabinet’s portfolio distribution had been delayed due to negotiations between the BJP and its coalition partners, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar faction of NCP, over key departments. Fadnavis retained several important ministries, including Home, Energy, and Law and Judiciary, while Eknath Shinde was tasked with Urban Development and Housing.
Ajit Pawar, who also retained the post of Finance Minister, emphasized the importance of collaborative governance as the state prepares for the upcoming budget session in March 2024. Pawar committed to working closely with both Fadnavis and Shinde to ensure a cohesive and well-planned budget, stating, "I want to take CM Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde into confidence and prepare the budget." His statement underscores the significance of cooperation in tackling the challenges posed by the high number of ministers and ensuring that key projects, especially those left pending, are completed in a timely manner.
