Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a clarification following the circulation of a viral video showing his heated argument with a woman IPS officer in Solapur. The incident triggered a political and public uproar, with many questioning whether the Deputy CM had attempted to misuse his position to interfere in a police operation.
In his official statement on Friday, Pawar said his intention had been “misunderstood and misrepresented” in the viral clips. Addressing the controversy, he stated:
"My attention has been drawn to certain videos circulating regarding my interaction with police officials in Solapur. Let me state clearly that my intention was not to interfere with law enforcement but to ensure that the situation on the ground remained calm and did not escalate further."
The Viral Video Controversy
The row erupted when a video surfaced showing Ajit Pawar in a tense phone exchange with Sub-Divisional Police Officer Anjana Krishna, who was reportedly leading an operation against illegal excavation of murrum soil in Solapur.
In the clip, Pawar could be heard saying, “Suno, mai deputy chief minister bol raha hu aur aapko aadesh deta hu ki vo rokwao” (Listen, I am the deputy chief minister and giving you the order to stop it). The statement appeared to be made over the phone of an NCP worker present at the site.
However, the officer reportedly did not recognize Pawar’s voice. To this, Pawar allegedly responded, “Mai tere upar action lunga” (I will take action against you). He further asked the officer to share her number or call him on WhatsApp, insisting that she would recognise him once she saw his face.
The video went further to show Pawar making a video call to Krishna, asking her to stop the action against illegal excavation, with Krishna replying that she could not confirm his identity until she saw his face.
Ajit Pawar’s Clarification
Following the outrage, Pawar emphasized that his intention was not to obstruct law enforcement but to avoid a potential clash on the ground. He said he respected the independence of the police force and reiterated his deep respect for women officers serving with courage and distinction.
"I remain firmly committed to transparent governance and to ensuring that every illegal activity, including sand mining, is dealt with strictly as per the law," he said.
By releasing this clarification, Pawar sought to distance himself from allegations that he was attempting to shield party workers or illegal activities.
Sand Mining and Governance Issues
The controversy has reignited discussions around illegal sand and murrum mining in Maharashtra, a recurring issue linked with political and local interests. Pawar’s statement that all illegal activities will be acted upon “strictly as per the law” was seen as an attempt to underscore his government’s commitment to good governance and accountability.
Illegal sand mining has often been at the center of administrative clashes in Maharashtra, with police officials frequently targeted by local political networks. The viral video involving Pawar added fuel to the narrative that political interference hampers law enforcement operations.
Political and Public Reaction
The video sparked debate across political and social platforms, with critics arguing that the Deputy CM’s tone appeared to reflect political high-handedness. Opposition leaders demanded clarity on whether Pawar was attempting to protect certain individuals involved in illegal mining.
Supporters of Pawar, however, maintained that the viral clip was taken out of context and that his later clarification highlighted his true intention of maintaining peace and order.
The incident also drew attention to the delicate balance between politics and law enforcement in Maharashtra, where sand mining cases have repeatedly been linked to local disputes, violence, and corruption.
Respect for Police Officers
In his statement, Pawar made a point to emphasize his respect for the police force, especially for women officers. He acknowledged the courage and distinction with which they perform their duties and clarified that his comments should not be seen as disrespectful or threatening.
By reaffirming his stand on transparent governance, Pawar attempted to place focus back on the broader policy agenda of his government rather than the controversy.
Conclusion
The Ajit Pawar viral video controversy highlights the challenges political leaders face in balancing their administrative responsibilities with public perception. While the Deputy CM’s heated phone conversation with a woman IPS officer drew sharp criticism, his subsequent clarification framed his actions as an attempt to avoid escalation and ensure calm.
Pawar’s assurance that illegal sand mining and other unlawful activities will be dealt with firmly may help in mitigating the fallout, but the incident has already sparked debates about the influence of politics over law enforcement in Maharashtra.
As the controversy continues, the government’s response and follow-up actions will determine whether the issue is seen as a momentary misunderstanding or a deeper problem of political interference in governance.
