Multiple law enforcement officers have been shot in southern Virginia’s Pittsylvania County, in a shocking incident that has once again highlighted the dangers faced by police while on duty in the United States.

The shooting took place on Wednesday (local time) in Gretna, Virginia, as deputies were serving warrants at a residence. According to US Congressman John McGuire, his “thoughts and prayers” were with the officers who were injured, and he extended support to their families during this difficult time. Images from the scene showed a large number of police vehicles and emergency response units parked in the area.

A public official, speaking on condition of anonymity to KGNS TV, confirmed that the shooting occurred during the execution of a legal warrant. Multiple shots were reportedly fired inside the property, injuring several deputies.

Authorities have confirmed that the injuries sustained by the deputies are non-life-threatening. However, due to the dangerous situation inside the residence, a SWAT team was deployed to extract the injured officers safely.

McGuire issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families. We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time.”

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia State Troopers were among the agencies that responded to the scene. Officials have not yet released details about the suspect or the motive behind the shooting.
