Government affirms terror camps in Pakistan were targeted without harming civilians, calling out Pakistan’s violations.
In a significant visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the growing concerns of citizens in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and the civilian shelling in Poonch by Pakistan. On May 30, 2025, Amit Shah reached Poonch district where he condemned the cowardly Pahalgam terror attack, extending solidarity to the victims' families and assuring nationwide support. He emphasized that India will continue to respond with strength to any terror threat and reaffirmed the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
Poonch, which saw the highest civilian casualties—14 out of 28 deaths during Pakistani shelling and drone strikes between May 7 and May 10—became the focus of Amit Shah’s visit. He distributed appointment letters to families affected by shelling and drone attacks, symbolizing the Centre's commitment to rehabilitation and justice. These actions were part of the post-Operation Sindoor response, a mission that involved the destruction of terrorist camps across the border following the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, on April 22.
During his speech, Shah stated, “Pakistan carried out a cowardly attack targeting residential and religious sites. Our innocent civilians suffered. Though a government job cannot replace a loved one, it symbolises our nation's deep emotions.” He added, “The entire country stands with the brave people of Poonch like a rock. Your courage and sacrifice are now the strength of our nation.”
Shah also confirmed that every act of terror will face a fitting and strong response under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He praised the Indian Armed Forces for their precise retaliatory strikes, emphasizing that only terrorist camps were hit, and no civilian or army post on either side suffered harm during the Operation Sindoor counter-strike.
The Pahalgam terror attack and its aftermath triggered the government’s response with full-scale operations targeting nine Pakistani air bases suspected of harbouring terrorists. The Home Minister reaffirmed that international condemnation of Pakistan’s shelling further isolates the neighbouring country diplomatically.
His visit also had a strong administrative agenda. Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting late on May 29 in Jammu, along with Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials from the army, police, and paramilitary forces. The review focused on ensuring safe passage for pilgrims participating in the Amarnath Yatra, a key religious event in the region.
The Amarnath Yatra 2025 is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 9. For this, 581 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)—approximately 42,000 personnel—are being deployed to ensure security. Of these, 424 companies will be positioned across Jammu and Kashmir, with the rest securing key pilgrimage routes and Srinagar city. Shah assured that utmost vigilance will be maintained throughout the Yatra.
“Chaired a review meeting for the Amarnath Pilgrimage and evaluated the security arrangements. Instructed to maintain utmost vigilance and ensure seamless completion of the sacred journey,” Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter).
This marked Amit Shah’s third visit to Jammu and Kashmir since April 6, and the first following the Indian Armed Forces’ retaliatory operations into Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) earlier this month. The Ministry of Home Affairs views the current security situation in the region as a turning point in India’s counter-terrorism strategy.
While in Poonch, Shah also interacted with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, further reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to national security and morale among deployed forces. The Home Minister visited several religious sites, promoting unity and expressing solidarity across faiths in a region often disrupted by external hostilities.
Shah's visit to the region has been pivotal, especially following the Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack, as India moves to strengthen its internal security architecture, enhance citizen confidence in conflict zones, and project a resolute national stand against terrorism. The symbolic distribution of jobs and support measures represents a blend of compassion and governance, marking a strategic shift in the government’s approach to victim support and border community welfare.
Notably, the Centre’s focus on protecting pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra illustrates the priority placed on religious freedom and civilian safety, especially in volatile border regions. The deployment of thousands of personnel and the reallocation of 80 companies from Operation Sindoor reflects the government’s intention to maintain an uninterrupted pilgrimage even under potential threats.
To summarize, Amit Shah’s visit to Poonch and Kashmir reiterates the Indian government's multi-pronged approach: condemning terror, aiding victims, strengthening border defence, and ensuring communal harmony. His message is clear—India will not allow any act of terror to go unanswered, and the nation stands united with those affected.
With the Amarnath Yatra preparations in full swing, and security forces on high alert, the Centre is determined to ensure peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir, even as external provocations continue. As Amit Shah affirmed, India’s decisive leadership, accurate intelligence, and unmatched armed strength are the cornerstones of its new anti-terror doctrine, firmly steering the country towards a more secure and resilient future.
