On September 20, 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a definitive government plan to eradicate Naxalism in India by March 31, 2026, emphasizing a dual approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. During a meeting in New Delhi with victims of Naxal violence from Chhattisgarh, Shah made a strong appeal for Naxals to surrender and reintegrate into mainstream society. He warned that an all-out operation would be launched if they do not comply.
Shah criticized the selective advocacy for human rights, underscoring the plight of those affected by Naxal violence. He stated that the government's strategy includes a mix of security measures and developmental programs in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas to diminish the appeal of Naxalism. Shah highlighted that Naxalism has been effectively limited to just four districts in Chhattisgarh, and he reiterated the government's resolve to restore peace and uphold the rule of law, particularly in remaining strongholds like Bastar.
This initiative reflects a broader policy aimed at establishing stability in regions plagued by Naxal influence, balancing the need for security with socio-economic development to counter the ideology of Naxalism. The government's commitment to address both human rights concerns and developmental needs aims to create an environment conducive to peace and rehabilitation for those affected by violence.
