In a high-profile visit to West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah vowed that the BJP will identify and remove infiltrators from the state if the saffron party forms the government after the 2026 Assembly elections. Addressing a press conference, Shah emphasized the creation of a national grid aimed at preventing infiltration and highlighted the BJP’s commitment to development, welfare, and revival of Bengal’s cultural heritage.

Shah sharply criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, accusing it of obstructing Centre’s welfare schemes intended for the people of West Bengal. He alleged that corruption and fear have reached their peak under Banerjee’s administration, severely affecting the state’s growth and development over the last 14 years. According to Shah, Bengal has witnessed stagnation in developmental projects, with schemes initiated by Prime Minister Modi reportedly falling prey to local toll syndicates.

“After April 15, 2026, when the BJP government is formed in West Bengal, we will start the revival of Bengal’s heritage and culture. This ‘Banga Bhoomi’ holds great importance for us because the BJP was formed by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a great leader from here,” Shah said, underlining the party’s historical connection to Bengal.

Addressing the issue of border security, Shah accused the West Bengal government of hindering the construction of fencing along the Bangladesh border, which, he claimed, has allowed infiltration to continue under Mamata’s watch. He pointed out that infiltration has been successfully controlled in other border states like Tripura, Assam, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kashmir, and Gujarat, and alleged that in Bengal, such infiltration is deliberately tolerated to alter the demographics for electoral gains. He described the matter as one of national security, promising that stopping infiltration and removing infiltrators will be a major electoral issue in the upcoming polls.

Highlighting the BJP’s political growth in West Bengal, Shah provided a detailed account of the party’s electoral performance since 2014. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 17% votes and 2 seats, followed by 10% votes and 3 Assembly seats in the 2016 Assembly elections. The party’s performance surged in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, winning 41% votes and 18 seats, and in the 2021 Assembly elections, it garnered 21% votes and 77 seats, marking a dramatic rise from just 3 seats in 2016. Shah asserted that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured 39% votes and 12 seats, and confidently predicted that in 2026, the BJP will form a government with a clear majority in West Bengal.

Shah also outlined the party’s plans for development and welfare, promising that under a BJP government, the river of development will flow across Bengal, with a focus on prioritizing the welfare of the poor. He reiterated that all administrative and political obstacles hindering progress under the current state government would be addressed, and that Bengal’s cultural and economic renaissance would be a priority.

The upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, likely to be held in the first half of 2026, are set to be heavily influenced by issues of infiltration, border security, governance, and corruption, according to Shah. While the Election Commission has yet to announce the official schedule, the BJP’s strategy, as outlined by Shah, positions the party as a force promising law and order, infrastructure development, and efficient welfare delivery.
