Tarsem Singh Announces New Political Party in Punjab

On January 5, 2025, Tarsem Singh, father of Amritpal Singh, the controversial Waris Punjab De chief, revealed plans to launch a new political party on January 14 in Sri Muktsar Sahib, coinciding with the Maghi festival. This decision marks a significant move in Punjab’s political landscape as Singh expressed his commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing the state, including drug abuse, religious conversions, and farmers' rights.

Speaking to ANI, Tarsem Singh clarified that the party launch would be accompanied by the formation of a working committee, which will outline the party’s constitution and other key policies. He appealed to the people of Punjab to support the initiative, aiming to rescue the state from various challenges that have plagued its social and political fabric in recent years.

Amritpal Singh's Political Journey

Amritpal Singh, an independent Member of Parliament (MP) from the Khadoor Sahib constituency, has played a pivotal role in Punjab's political discourse. Known for his association with the pro-Khalistan organization, Waris Punjab De, he returned to Punjab in 2022 following the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu. Since then, Amritpal Singh has been a prominent figure, advocating for the Khalistan cause and becoming a strong voice among pro-Khalistani elements in the state.

Amritpal Singh made headlines in February 2023, when he led a protest in Moga’s Rode village to free one of his aides, resulting in a violent clash with Punjab Police. This incident was one of several that highlighted his contentious role in Punjab’s political and social affairs. Despite facing legal challenges, including his recent arrest and confinement in Dibrugarh, Assam, Amritpal Singh managed to win the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.

Impact of Tarsem Singh’s New Party

While the details of the party’s agenda and political strategies remain to be fully disclosed, Tarsem Singh’s move to launch a party signals a shift in Punjab's political dynamics. The party will focus on key regional concerns such as the drug menace, which has severely impacted Punjab’s youth, the issue of religious conversions, and the plight of farmers, who have been at the center of the ongoing farmers' protests.
