The Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 have delivered a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and social activist Anna Hazare has strongly criticized the party’s leadership and alleged involvement in corruption. According to Hazare, AAP’s poor electoral performance was the result of corruption scandals and a loss of public trust, which significantly affected its vote share in key constituencies.

Reacting to the election results, Anna Hazare stated that AAP’s downfall was inevitable due to its involvement in corruption-related controversies, particularly the Delhi liquor policy scam. Arvind Kejriwal, who once projected himself as a leader of clean politics, has faced serious allegations in recent years. Hazare remarked:

"I have been saying for a long time that election candidates must have strong character, good ideas, and a clean image. But AAP lacked that. They got entangled in liquor and money scandals, which tarnished Arvind Kejriwal’s image. That is why they are getting fewer votes in the election."

The Impact of Corruption Allegations on AAP’s Election Performance

The liquor scam, which surfaced in 2022, was one of the biggest corruption allegations against AAP’s leadership. Several senior leaders, including Manish Sisodia, were investigated for alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy. The controversy led to arrests, court hearings, and widespread criticism, ultimately damaging AAP’s credibility among voters.

Hazare, who was once a mentor to Kejriwal during the India Against Corruption movement, has frequently spoken out against AAP’s deviation from its founding principles. He emphasized that the party, which was built on the promise of clean governance, has lost its moral high ground due to financial scandals and governance failures.

AAP’s Declining Support and BJP’s Gains

With BJP crossing the majority mark in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, AAP has suffered significant losses, particularly in Muslim-dominated constituencies where it previously held strong support. The division of votes between AAP, Congress, and AIMIM further worked in BJP’s favor.

Hazare’s comments reflect a larger sentiment among voters who once supported AAP’s anti-corruption stance but have now turned against the party due to allegations of misconduct. Political analysts believe that AAP’s failure to address governance issues and internal conflicts played a crucial role in its electoral defeat.
