Apple’s iPhone shipments in India for the January-March 2025 quarter have hit a new record, with the company shipping over 3 million units, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). This marks a significant jump from 2.21 million units shipped during the same period last year, underscoring the company’s growing presence in the Indian market. The 3 million iPhones shipped in Q1 2025 not only represents a robust quarter for Apple but also demonstrates the expanding appeal of its products in a market that has seen fluctuations in overall smartphone sales due to inflation and weaker consumer sentiment.
The surge in iPhone shipments comes despite a mid-single-digit decline in the broader Indian smartphone market. Industry experts attribute Apple’s success to several key factors, including affordability measures such as zero-interest monthly installments, cashback offers, and substantial online retail discounts. These initiatives have allowed Apple to drive double-digit growth in the premium smartphone segment, as consumers are increasingly willing to invest in higher-end smartphones, particularly the iPhone 16 series.
The standout performer within the iPhone 16 series has been the iPhone 16e, which offers a more accessible price point than its more premium counterparts. This model has surpassed earlier models, such as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 13, in terms of units shipped in India, further fueling Apple's momentum in the market. As Apple continues to tailor its products to the needs of Indian consumers, its affordable pricing strategies are proving to be a key driver for growth in what is becoming one of its most important global markets.
In addition to the surge in domestic shipments, Apple has also seen strong performance in exports, with its manufacturing partner Foxconn exporting iPhones worth Rs. 11,213 crore (US$ 1.31 billion) in March 2025 alone. This export value matches Foxconn's total exports for January and February 2025 combined. As a result, the total value of iPhone exports from India to the United States in 2025 has already reached Rs. 45,368 crore (US$ 5.3 billion). This further highlights India’s role as a key hub for Apple’s global supply chain, with the country now serving as a critical manufacturing base for the tech giant.
Looking back to 2024, India became Apple’s fourth-largest market globally, with shipments reaching 12 million units, representing a 35% year-on-year increase. In the fourth quarter of 2024, Apple also broke into India’s top five smartphone brands by volume, securing a 10% market share. This growth trajectory is a testament to the company's success in adapting its strategy to the Indian market and its increasing brand presence in the country.
The company’s financial performance has mirrored this growth, with Apple’s net profit increasing by 23% to Rs. 2,745.7 crore (US$ 320.67 billion) and a 36% jump in revenue to Rs. 67,121.6 crore (US$ 7.84 billion) in 2024. These impressive figures reflect Apple’s ongoing success in India, driven by strong demand for its premium smartphones and innovative product lines.
To further solidify its position in India, Apple plans to open four new retail stores in major cities, including Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai. These stores are expected to enhance Apple’s customer engagement and increase its market penetration by providing a more personalized and hands-on shopping experience. Alongside the new retail openings, Apple is also ramping up hiring efforts across retail and manufacturing roles, signaling a continued commitment to strengthening its Indian operations.
As the premium smartphone market in India continues to evolve, Apple remains a dominant player, with its Q1 2025 shipments signaling the potential for even stronger growth in the future. Despite broader challenges in the smartphone market, Apple’s strategic pricing, focus on consumer affordability, and robust product offerings continue to drive its success in the Indian market. As the company works to expand its footprint in India, its strong market share, increased retail presence, and continued investment in local manufacturing place it in an advantageous position for the upcoming quarters.
