Ashok Leyland’s subsidiary, OHM Global Mobility, has secured a major order from the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to supply and maintain 500 electric buses, marking a significant milestone in India's electric mobility transformation. OHM Global Mobility, which is Ashok Leyland's electric mobility arm focusing on mobility-as-a-service (MaaS), will handle the operations and maintenance of these buses for the next 12 years. This strategic win aligns with the broader government agenda of enhancing sustainable public transport systems in major Indian cities.
Of the 500 electric buses, 400 will be non-air-conditioned, and the remaining 100 will feature air conditioning, designed to suit the hot and humid weather conditions in Chennai. These buses, specifically the EiV12 model supplied by Switch Mobility, another Ashok Leyland subsidiary, will have a seating capacity for 37 passengers and additional standing room for 24. The buses are designed with an ultra-low floor, which provides easy boarding for elderly passengers and people with disabilities, making public transport in Chennai more inclusive.
These electric buses boast a range of over 200 kilometers on a single charge, ensuring their suitability for the longer routes within the city of Chennai. With advancements in electric vehicle technology, the EiV12 buses promise to deliver not only comfort and efficiency but also significant environmental benefits by reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, expressed excitement about this development: “Our SWITCH EiV12 buses combine cutting-edge technology, reliability, and comfort, making them the ideal solution for modern cities. We are committed to driving the transition to electric mobility, and this partnership with MTC is a step forward in creating cleaner, more efficient transport systems.”
The partnership with MTC is part of a broader push by Ashok Leyland to cement its position as a leader in electric mobility in India. With this order, the company’s electric bus fleet will grow significantly, adding to the 950 vehicles already in operation. Ashok Leyland’s current order book now exceeds 2,000 vehicles, positioning the company as a key player in the sustainable urban transport sector.
Switch Mobility, which focuses on the development of advanced electric vehicles, will play a pivotal role in this contract. The EiV12 buses represent the company's latest innovation, designed specifically for urban public transport. The ultra-low floor design of the buses ensures maximum accessibility and comfort for passengers. With a 200 km range per charge, these buses are expected to serve the long city routes efficiently, further driving the green energy revolution in Indian cities.
Ashok Leyland’s OHM Global Mobility arm has proven to be a significant contributor to the company’s vision of electric mobility as a service. The deployment of these electric buses in Chennai will significantly reduce the city’s dependence on fossil fuels and improve air quality.
On the stock market front, Ashok Leyland’s shares were trading at ₹217.5 apiece, up by 1.58% on October 24, shortly after the announcement of this new order. The stock has seen a robust performance throughout the year, recording a 17% gain year-to-date. Investors have responded positively to the company’s growing focus on electric vehicle technology and its ability to secure high-value contracts in the public transport sector.
Ashok Leyland’s proactive move into electric mobility through its subsidiaries, OHM Global and Switch Mobility, reflects its long-term strategy to become a leader in clean energy solutions in India. As cities across the country work towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainability, the demand for electric buses is expected to surge, creating more opportunities for companies like Ashok Leyland.
