In one of the deadliest aerial assaults on Ukraine's capital in recent months, a Russian missile and drone barrage hit Kyiv overnight on Tuesday, killing at least 14 civilians and injuring over 44 others, local authorities confirmed. The attack, lasting nearly nine hours, was marked by a relentless wave of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that targeted multiple districts while residents were asleep.
Destruction Across Kyiv
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, the attack involved 175 drones, over 14 cruise missiles, and at least two ballistic missiles. A nine-storey residential building was severely damaged, with entire apartments destroyed from the top floors down to the basement. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the administration, confirmed that emergency services were deployed immediately to search for survivors buried under the debris.
“The nature of the damage is direct hits on residential buildings. Rockets — from the upper floors to the basement,” said the administration in a formal statement.
Ukraine’s Emergency Service revealed that more than 44 individuals sustained injuries, many of them critically.
In addition to Kyiv, drone strikes hit the southern port city of Odesa, injuring 13 people, including a child, reported Oleh Kiper, the regional governor.
Residential Buildings Levelled
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, who visited the scene, stated that 30 apartments in a single residential complex were completely destroyed by a direct missile hit. He added, “We have 27 locations that were attacked by the enemy. We currently have over 2,000 personnel—rescuers, police, municipal workers and medical staff—working at the sites.”
Among the victims was a U.S. citizen, killed due to shrapnel wounds sustained during the bombardment, confirmed the minister.
Residents described the horror of the attack in chilling terms. Olena Lapyshniak, a 49-year-old resident, recounted how a whistling noise was followed by two powerful explosions that shattered her windows and blew off doors.
“It’s horrible, it’s scary, in one moment there is no life,” she said, visibly traumatised. “There’s no military infrastructure here, nothing here, nothing. It’s horrible when people just die at night.”
Widespread Fires and Debris
The Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts of Kyiv were among the worst affected, where multiple fires broke out due to falling debris. The Kyiv Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said that these blazes were caused by fragments of drones intercepted by Ukraine’s air defences.
Emergency personnel fought through burning rubble to reach survivors, many of whom were trapped inside partially collapsed structures. The attacks, coordinated and sustained over hours, created a scene of chaos and despair in neighbourhoods that had previously seen relative calm in recent weeks.
Attack Timing Coincides With G7 Summit
The attack occurred just as world leaders gathered at the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada, an event Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was scheduled to attend. Canada, holding the G7 presidency, had invited Zelenskyy for one-on-one meetings with leaders from across the globe.
The incident is being viewed as a strategic move by Moscow to send a signal to the global community amidst ongoing geopolitical negotiations.
Originally, Zelenskyy was set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump during the summit. However, Trump unexpectedly cut his trip short, returning to Washington on Monday night due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
Escalation of Russian Offensives
The Kyiv strike is part of an escalating wave of aerial offensives by Russia. In recent weeks, Moscow has launched a record number of drone and missile attacks targeting key Ukrainian cities. These attacks have coincided with reported efforts by Ukraine’s Security Services to strike deep into Russian airbases, targeting fighter aircraft and other military infrastructure.
The tit-for-tat strategy has created a cycle of increasingly aggressive military actions, with civilians bearing the brunt of the damage.
Humanitarian and International Response
The attack has drawn strong condemnation from multiple international bodies. European Union officials, as well as leaders from Canada, Germany, France, and the UK, have labelled the strikes as "war crimes" due to their deliberate targeting of civilian populations.
Several global humanitarian organisations, including Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross, are working alongside Ukrainian authorities to treat the wounded and provide temporary shelter for those who lost their homes.
Medical aid, food supplies, and psychological support teams have been mobilised in coordination with Kyiv’s emergency services.
Peace Talks and the Way Forward
Despite continued diplomatic efforts in Istanbul, there has been little progress in the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The only tangible results so far have been prisoner exchanges, which President Zelenskyy confirmed are likely to conclude next week.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians brace for more attacks, as air sirens continue to echo across cities, and shelters remain overcrowded. The population remains resilient, though the emotional toll of constant bombings, destruction of property, and loss of life grows heavier by the day.
Civilian Voices Amid the Rubble
Perhaps the most poignant element of this tragedy is the human cost—children pulled from rubble, elderly survivors mourning their loved ones, and entire families displaced overnight. Many Kyiv residents took to social media to share photos of the destruction, ask for help locating missing persons, and coordinate local support networks.
As the world watches, Ukraine’s resolve remains unshaken, but the need for a meaningful international response grows more urgent with every passing hour.
