Atishi will be sworn in as Delhi's Chief Minister on September 21, 2024.

Arvind Kejriwal resigned after his arrest over alleged liquor policy irregularities.

Atishi aims to prove her majority in the assembly session scheduled for September 26-27.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially announced that Atishi will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, 2024. This date was recommended by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in a letter to the President, following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal resigned on Tuesday after facing allegations related to irregularities in Delhi’s liquor policy, a case that also implicated former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. Sisodia, who has recently been granted bail after an 18-month imprisonment, intends to run for re-election, while AAP insists that his arrest is part of a political conspiracy orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Atishi's appointment marks her as the third woman to hold the position of Delhi Chief Minister, following Sheila Dikshit from the Congress and Sushma Swaraj from the BJP. In her previous role within Kejriwal’s cabinet, she managed 14 key portfolios, including finance, education, and revenue, playing a significant role during Kejriwal’s absence.

Following her swearing-in, Atishi will need to prove her majority in the Delhi Assembly during a session scheduled for September 26-27. Reports indicate that all current ministers will remain in the new cabinet under her leadership, with Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain continuing in their existing roles. Additionally, new members, such as Vishesh Ravi from Karol Bagh and Kuldeep Kumar from Kondli, are being considered for inclusion in the cabinet.

Atishi expressed her gratitude towards Kejriwal for his trust in her leadership, stating, “I come from an ordinary family. Had I been in any other party, perhaps I would not have been given even an election ticket. But Arvind Kejriwal trusted me, made me an MLA and a minister, and today, gave me the responsibility of the Chief Minister.”

She emphasized her commitment to working towards securing Kejriwal’s return to office, declaring, “I will work with just one goal. We have to make Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister of Delhi once again.”

As the political landscape in Delhi continues to evolve, Atishi's leadership will be closely watched in the lead-up to the assembly session and beyond.
