This victory has given Australia a significant edge in their pursuit of a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, while leaving India’s fate in a more precarious position. Australia’s commanding win has propelled them to the second spot in the WTC standings, strengthening their position as they push to secure a place in the final, with a percentage of 61.46.

For India, the defeat at the MCG has been a setback, reducing their percentage to 52.78, though they remain in third place on the WTC points table. However, the road to the final has now become more challenging for Rohit Sharma and his team. India must win the upcoming final Test in Sydney to keep their hopes alive, but their fate is no longer entirely in their hands.

The WTC points table has undergone significant changes following Australia’s victory. Australia now has 118 points from 16 matches, giving them a considerable advantage, while India is on 114 points from 18 matches. To remain in contention, India must secure a win in Sydney, and even then, they will need help from other results.

Sri Lanka would need the Sydney Test to end in a draw and then, if they beat Australia 2-0 in their upcoming home series, they could dramatically secure a spot in the WTC Final.

At the top of the points table, South Africa remains in the number one spot with a PCT of 66.67, having qualified for the WTC Final after their dramatic victory against Pakistan in the Boxing Day Test in Centurion by two wickets. With South Africa already assured a place in the final, the race for the second spot has become even more intense.
