ustralia finished Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with a commanding total of 311/6. With Steve Smith (68*) and Pat Cummins (8*) unbeaten at stumps, the hosts are in a strong position as they look to build on their total tomorrow.
The day was highlighted by a thrilling debut from 19-year-old Sam Konstas, who treated Jasprit Bumrah with confidence, hitting a couple of sixes off the Indian spearhead. Konstas, making his Test debut in place of Nathan McSweeney, was a picture of excitement and aggression, scoring a quick 60 before being dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. His energy was infectious, and his altercation with Virat Kohli, after a shoulder bump during the match, added an extra layer of drama to the already intense atmosphere at the MCG.
The match also saw stellar contributions from Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. Khawaja, after surviving early skirmishes with Bumrah, reached his first half-century of the series, while Labuschagne’s composed innings helped Australia keep the scoreboard ticking. However, Bumrah and Kohli provided India with breakthroughs, with Labuschagne falling to a smart catch by Virat Kohli, and Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh dismissed in quick succession.
The post-tea session saw Australia continue to press ahead, with Steve Smith and Pat Cummins standing firm. Smith, in particular, will be crucial for Australia’s innings on Day 2, as India will need to get the remaining wickets as quickly as possible to avoid a significant total.
Meanwhile, India’s first objective on Day 2 will be to dismiss the remaining batsmen for as few runs as possible. Smith is nearing a century, and if he gets there, India could be in trouble, as they would not want to concede 400+ runs in the first innings again.
The day wasn’t without controversy, as Virat Kohli was involved in an altercation with Konstas after what appeared to be an intentional shoulder bump. The incident led to a verbal confrontation, and while both players downplayed it, Kohli’s conduct could fall under a Level 2 offence as per the ICC Code of Conduct, possibly resulting in fines or demerit points.
Konstas, who was clearly excited to be playing at the MCG, brushed off the incident, saying, “Emotions got the better of us. Whatever happens on the field stays on the field.” His debut performance, along with the drama of the day, added an unforgettable chapter to this Boxing Day Test.
As the match moves into Day 2, Australia holds the upper hand, but India will look to fight back with the ball. With Smith and Cummins still at the crease, the game is set for another exciting day at the MCG.
