What's covered under the Article:

  1. Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach All-Time High in October 2024, Boosted by Festive Season Demand
  2. Two-Wheeler Sales Grow by 14.2% YoY, Led by Scooters and Motorcycles
  3. Three-Wheeler Segment Faces Minor Decline, Despite Overall Positive Growth in Registrations

The Indian automobile industry experienced a surge in sales during October 2024, bolstered by the festive season, including festivals like Dussehra and Diwali, which typically drive consumer demand. The passenger vehicle (PV) segment saw its highest-ever domestic sales for October, reaching an impressive 393,238 units, marking a modest 0.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to October 2023. Despite a higher base in 2023, this growth signals a stabilisation in the PV market, showing resilience as it continues to recover from the challenges of the previous years.

The growth in PV sales can be attributed to a combination of factors, including strong consumer interest, the availability of new models, and the festive buying rush. Rajesh Menon, Director General of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), stated that the rise in PV sales was largely due to the festive season, which traditionally results in increased demand for vehicles, particularly during festivals like Diwali. The festive period also saw a notable rise in registrations, with data from VAHAN, India’s national vehicle registration portal, showing over 30% growth in registrations for both PVs and two-wheelers compared to October 2023.

The two-wheeler (2W) segment also reported robust growth during this period, with domestic sales climbing by 14.2% YoY, totaling 2,164,276 units in October 2024. Scooters and motorcycles were the primary drivers of this growth, with scooters alone seeing a 22.3% increase in sales, while motorcycles recorded a solid 11% growth. This rise reflects a strong and sustained demand for personal mobility solutions, particularly among consumers looking for more affordable and efficient modes of transport in the wake of post-pandemic recovery and economic stabilization.

Scooters and motorcycles have long been a staple in the Indian market, but their growing appeal during the festive season underscores their importance in meeting the mobility needs of a diverse consumer base. Two-wheelers continue to dominate India’s transportation landscape, offering an attractive alternative to passenger vehicles for many first-time buyers and commuters seeking cost-effective solutions for short-distance travel.

On the other hand, the three-wheeler (3W) segment did not fare as well in October 2024, experiencing a slight decline of 0.7% YoY, with domestic sales dropping to 76,770 units from 77,344 units in October 2023. Despite this dip, three-wheelers have long been a vital part of India’s transport ecosystem, particularly for last-mile connectivity in urban and rural areas. The decrease in sales reflects some of the challenges faced by the 3W segment, which has had to grapple with issues such as fluctuating demand and regulatory changes. However, this segment did see an 11% increase in vehicle registrations during the same period, signaling that while sales have slowed, the overall market interest remains steady.

The automobile market in India has seen a remarkable turnaround, with the festive season proving to be a critical factor in driving up demand across multiple vehicle segments. Despite global uncertainties and supply chain challenges, India’s vehicle market continues to show positive momentum, especially in the passenger vehicle and two-wheeler categories, which are expected to remain strong in the coming months. The overall industry outlook is optimistic, with consumer demand and production capacity continuing to recover, leading to better growth prospects for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025.

The positive performance of the two-wheeler market, driven by growing demand for both scooters and motorcycles, suggests that more consumers are opting for personal mobility solutions that offer both convenience and affordability. Meanwhile, the passenger vehicle market appears to be stabilizing, even as the three-wheeler segment faces challenges.

Overall, the Indian automobile industry remains resilient, with strong sales figures marking an exciting phase for manufacturers and consumers alike.
