This announcement comes amid intensifying political demands and the nation’s complex transition following the resignation and exile of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

Yunus, a Nobel Laureate and globally known development economist, made the statement during a televised address to the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, promising a peaceful, inclusive, and reform-driven electoral process.

The Background: Fall of the Hasina Government

In August 2024, Bangladesh witnessed an extraordinary political upheaval, with mass student-led protests under the banner of Students Against Discrimination (SAD) culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the disbandment of the Awami League.

The uprising, now referred to as the “July Mass Movement”, left hundreds dead and thousands wounded, marking one of the most violent episodes in Bangladesh’s modern history. The movement was sparked by years of alleged political suppression, corruption, and human rights violations, triggering widespread unrest across major cities.

With Hasina now in exile in India, many of her top officials either imprisoned or on the run, and the Awami League declared non-functional, a power vacuum ensued. He added that the Election Commission will unveil a detailed electoral roadmap in due course, emphasizing that the electoral environment must reflect good governance and institutional credibility.

Three Core Mandates: Justice, Reform, Elections

Yunus’s interim government has consistently reiterated its threefold mandate:

1. Justice – Holding former regime leaders accountable for alleged crimes against humanity during the crackdown on the 2024 protests.

2. Reform – Institutional restructuring to prevent future autocracy and build electoral transparency.

3. Elections – Conducting a fair, festive, and peaceful national election that reflects the people's will.

“Without ensuring good governance in the institutions directly linked to the electoral process, all the sacrifices made by students and citizens will be in vain,” Yunus said.

He also stated that he expects substantial progress on justice and reforms before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which will be observed from mid-February to mid-March 2026.

The Trials of Former Regime Leaders
