In a significant development, Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, addressed growing concerns regarding the future of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in the country. Alam firmly stated that the Bangladesh government has no plans to ban ISKCON, despite rising tensions following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a monk formerly associated with the organization. Das, who was arrested on charges of sedition, has been a central figure in the controversy that has worsened the relationship between Bangladesh and India.
Alam's comments came in response to a query in which he emphasized that the government had repeatedly clarified there was no intention to impose a ban on ISKCON. His statement aimed to quell fears that the growing unrest might lead to drastic measures against the religious organization.
The tensions have been exacerbated by reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was detained at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while on his way to attend a rally in Chattogram. His arrest has drawn significant attention, as it came amidst increasing concerns over the safety of minority communities, particularly Hindus, during the ongoing political turmoil.
Meanwhile, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus addressed the concerns of a "campaign" against Bangladesh in his recent statements, alleging that "big countries" were involved in discrediting his administration. He referred to the "propaganda" against Bangladesh, including reports of attacks on the Bangladesh mission in Agartala and the targeting of minorities. Yunus called for national unity to counter these allegations and presented the Durga Puja festival in Bangladesh as an example of unity despite external efforts to stir unrest.

On the other hand, Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister, has mounted a scathing attack on Yunus, accusing him of being "power-hungry" and failing to protect religious minorities. Hasina, currently living in India, claimed that her family, including herself and her sister Sheikh Rehana, were at risk of being killed in a manner similar to her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, who was assassinated in 1975. Hasina also criticized Yunus for allowing the rise of attacks on places of worship and failing to protect the Hindu community.
The situation in Bangladesh remains volatile, with political divisions deepening and communal tensions escalating. As the government faces calls for greater protection of minority rights, especially for Hindus, the future of organizations like ISKCON remains uncertain.
