The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has raised serious concerns about the treatment of religious and ethnic minorities under the leadership of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. The council claims that the government has used important state institutions to discriminate against minorities, particularly Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians. They argue that the Yunus-led government has failed to protect these communities from attacks, harassment, and communal violence.

In a press conference, the council outlined a series of disturbing incidents, including 2,010 cases of communal violence between August 4 and 20 of the previous year. These incidents, they say, have been fueled by communal tensions rather than just political issues as suggested by the Yunus government. The government, however, has continuously denied these allegations, maintaining that many of the incidents were rooted in political motives rather than religious conflicts.

The council also reported that 174 new incidents of communal violence occurred between August 21 and December 31, leading to the deaths of 23 minority members and the rape of 9 women. These violent acts included arson, vandalism, looting, and the forcible takeover of properties and businesses belonging to minority groups. At least 15 individuals from these communities were arrested or tortured on allegations of undermining Islam, according to the council’s statements.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has also voiced concern about the political climate in the country. After Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in Bangladesh, the country has been experiencing increasing instability. The current Yunus-led government is facing accusations of undermining minority rights, especially amid escalating tensions with Hindu-majority India over minority issues. These tensions have sparked protests and counter-protests, further deepening the divide in the country.

An important point of contention is the shelter given to Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, in India. Several members of the interim government have expressed displeasure over India providing asylum to Hasina, and a special tribunal in Bangladesh has called for her arrest. A formal request for her extradition to Bangladesh has been made, but it remains unanswered by the Indian government.

The history between India and Bangladesh has been complicated but cooperative. In 1971, India took in 10 million refugees and played a crucial role in assisting Bangladesh during its war of independence from Pakistan. Since then, India has maintained strong ties with Bangladesh, and Sheikh Hasina is considered a trusted ally by New Delhi. Her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was a prominent leader in the independence movement, making the political dynamics between the two countries particularly significant.

However, the Yunus-led government came to power following a student-led uprising in which hundreds of people lost their lives. The uprising forced Sheikh Hasina to flee to India on August 5, ending her 15-year rule in Bangladesh. This period of political instability has significantly impacted the minority communities in the country, with communal violence and political unrest continuing to rise.

With tensions mounting and no clear solution in sight, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has vowed to continue its efforts to protect minority rights and demand accountability from the Yunus-led government. The situation remains volatile, with political divisions deepening and minorities facing an uncertain future in the country.
