Bangladesh has unveiled new currency notes replacing images of the country’s founding father Mujibur Rehman with famous artwork and images of Hindu and Buddhist temples. Since its formation in 1971, all banknotes featured Mujibur Rehman’s portrait. The interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus had announced last year a phased revamp of the currency with themes highlighting Bangladesh’s historical and archaeological architecture.
On Sunday, new Tk 1000, Tk 50 and Tk 20 notes were released ahead of Eid, featuring motifs of Hindu and Buddhist temples, artwork by the late artist Zainul Abedin, and the national martyrs memorial which honours those who died during the 1971 liberation war. These new notes are being issued from the Bangladesh Bank’s main office in Dhaka, with plans to extend issuance across the country.
According to Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan, the new currency series will not feature any human portraits but instead display natural landscapes and traditional landmarks. Existing notes and coins bearing Mujibur Rehman’s image will remain in circulation alongside the newly designed notes.
This currency redesign comes amid political developments in Bangladesh, including a tribunal indictment against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged mass murder during violent crackdowns on student protests. The International Crimes Tribunal has also issued a fresh arrest warrant against Awami League chief Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
The new currency marks a significant shift in Bangladesh’s approach to its national symbols on legal tender, highlighting cultural heritage and diversity.
