Trump’s accusations stem from a memo ordering declassification of FBI's Crossfire Hurricane probe into Russian interference.
In a major political development from Washington, former U.S. President Barack Obama has forcefully rejected recent allegations from former President Donald Trump that accused him of being part of a "treasonous conspiracy" tied to Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. The accusations stem from a report issued by Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard last week, which detailed alleged election fraud and suggested criminal action against several top officials from the Obama administration.
Obama’s office issued a strong rebuttal through his spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, who described the claims as “bizarre,” “ridiculous,” and “a weak attempt at distraction.” Rodenbush emphasized that no evidence in the newly released documents contradicts the bipartisan findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee report from 2020. That report, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio, confirmed that Russia sought to influence the election but did not manipulate votes or determine the outcome.
The controversy was triggered by a memo Donald Trump issued in March, which called for the declassification of all documents related to “Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Gabbard’s report, produced under her new role as DNI, suggests that senior U.S. officials during Obama’s tenure, including then-Vice President Joe Biden, James Comey, James Clapper, and John Brennan, were part of what Trump described as a “treasonous plot.”
Tulsi Gabbard, who previously served as a Democratic Congresswoman before turning independent, stated that her office has turned over evidence to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution of those involved. According to The Hill, Gabbard’s findings are now under review by federal authorities, though there has been no official response from the Justice Department on whether it will proceed with charges.
During a press briefing, Donald Trump doubled down on the accusations, declaring Obama "guilty" and claiming, “This was treason, this was every word you can think of.” The former president also suggested that multiple officials from the Obama administration could be subject to criminal charges, making it a significant escalation in his ongoing campaign to challenge the narrative of Russian involvement in the 2016 elections.
While the report has reignited political tensions, Obama’s team maintains that the entire narrative is a politically motivated distraction. They argue that the goal is to deflect attention from Trump’s own legal challenges and to shift public focus onto a controversy that has already been thoroughly investigated and closed by multiple bipartisan bodies.
Further complicating the narrative, The Federal Election Commission (FEC) previously fined the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Clinton campaign for failing to disclose payments to the law firm Perkins Coie, which was involved in the initial research into Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. The FEC found that the DNC was fined $105,000 while Clinton's campaign paid $8,000. This research eventually led to the hiring of Christopher Steele, a retired British intelligence officer, whose controversial dossier sparked much of the early debate over Trump’s links to Russian actors.
However, critics argue that the FEC’s fines were related to campaign finance disclosure violations, not proof of any conspiracy or manipulation. Obama allies have underscored that the Steele dossier, while politically damaging, was not the basis of the official investigations led by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
Analysts suggest that this renewed political feud has revived polarizing narratives from the Trump and Obama eras, even as new leadership grapples with contemporary challenges. The revival of the Crossfire Hurricane saga comes at a time when the U.S. political climate is already strained with legal battles, impeachment threats, and looming elections.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, legal experts believe that any attempt to prosecute former top officials for treason would require an extraordinary burden of proof and is unlikely to materialize unless new, concrete evidence emerges.
Meanwhile, Democrats have dismissed the report as politically motivated, stating that it distracts from Trump’s multiple legal battles, including pending court decisions on his 2020 election-related conduct and alleged misuse of classified information.
Obama’s calm but firm response to the accusations is seen by some as a strategic move to avoid amplifying the controversy, while his supporters believe that the lack of fresh evidence in Gabbard’s report speaks volumes about the political motives behind it.
As this drama continues to unfold, the American public is once again thrust into debates over loyalty, interference, and accountability—issues that dominated the headlines in the second half of the 2010s and now resurface in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
The report, reactions, and subsequent statements by key political figures will likely dominate U.S. political discourse in the weeks ahead, even as institutions like the DOJ, FEC, and Senate prepare to review or reassert their findings on one of the most polarizing investigations in modern American history.
