  • Aaditya Thackeray slams BCCI, calling it anti-national for supporting cricket with Pakistan.

  • He said blood and cricket cannot go together when India faces cross-border terror.

  • The row adds political heat to India-Pakistan cricket relations amid national security debates.

The controversy over India-Pakistan cricket ties has once again taken a political turn after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray lashed out at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), calling it “anti-national”. His sharp criticism comes amid discussions around cricketing engagements between the two countries despite continuing cross-border tensions.

Speaking at a party meeting, Aaditya Thackeray raised a pointed question: “If blood and water cannot flow together, how can blood and cricket go together?” His statement reflects the long-standing Shiv Sena position that India should completely sever sports and cultural relations with Pakistan until terrorism and cross-border violence end.

The BCCI, as the governing body for Indian cricket, has repeatedly maintained that decisions on playing against Pakistan are taken in consultation with the Government of India. While India and Pakistan have not engaged in bilateral cricket series for over a decade, the two teams continue to face each other in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup.

Shiv Sena leaders, however, argue that even limited sporting engagements contradict the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and citizens who suffer from terrorist attacks. Aaditya Thackeray’s statement suggests that the BCCI is prioritising cricket revenues and international pressure over national interest.

The row is not new. Shiv Sena has a history of opposing India-Pakistan cricket matches. In earlier years, Sena activists had even disrupted events and threatened to block Pakistan players from participating in Indian tournaments. The party’s “no cricket with Pakistan” stance has remained consistent.

On the other hand, cricket administrators and many fans argue that sports should remain separate from politics. They point out that cricketing ties have often acted as a soft diplomatic channel between India and Pakistan, easing tensions during difficult times.

The debate also highlights a larger question: Should India continue to engage with Pakistan in global sporting events, or should it push for a complete boycott? While a boycott might send a strong political message, it could also have implications for India’s standing in the international cricket community and may impact broadcasting revenues and tournament arrangements.

Aaditya Thackeray’s remarks have stirred fresh controversy and are likely to intensify political pressure on the BCCI. With national security always a sensitive issue, the intersection of cricket and politics continues to spark strong emotions across the country.

As India prepares for upcoming international tournaments where matches against Pakistan are inevitable, the clash between political sentiment and sports diplomacy is expected to deepen. Whether the BCCI will respond to Shiv Sena’s “anti-national” charge remains to be seen, but the issue ensures that cricket between the two nations will remain as much a political battleground as a sporting one.
