-
With this new order, BEL’s total order book for the current financial year has reached ₹2,803 crore.
BEL’s New ₹2,210 Crore Deal: A Big Boost to India’s Defence Preparedness
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence, has achieved a significant milestone by signing a ₹2,210 crore contract with the Government of India. The deal involves the supply of Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite for the Mi-17V5 helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
This order comes under the purview of Regulation 30 of SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, and was officially disclosed by BEL through a formal press release on 7th April 2025.
What’s in the Deal?
This isn't just a supply contract; it is a strategic development in India's defence ecosystem. The EW Suite, which BEL will supply, is indigenously designed and developed by CASDIC, DRDO, and will be manufactured by BEL.
The suite includes three major components:
-
Radar Warning Receiver (RWR): Detects radar signals from enemy systems and alerts the pilot.
-
Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS): Warns of incoming missile threats using infrared and UV sensors.
-
Countermeasure Dispensing System (CMDS): Automatically deploys chaffs and flares to misguide enemy missiles.
All these systems work together to significantly enhance the survivability of helicopters during hostile combat missions.
Indigenous Technology at the Forefront
The most important aspect of this contract is the "Make in India" initiative it promotes. The EW Suite is 100% indigenous, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology.
Developed by CASDIC, a lab of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the technology has been thoroughly tested and validated for use in military environments. This suite is being manufactured by BEL at its Bangalore facility, which is already known for high-end military electronics.
Strategic Importance for Indian Air Force
The Mi-17V5 helicopter is a Russian origin multi-role helicopter used by the Indian Air Force. It plays a crucial role in both combat and non-combat missions, including logistics, air assault, casualty evacuation, and disaster relief.
However, these helicopters were vulnerable to modern electronic warfare and missile threats. With the integration of BEL’s EW Suite, their operational capability and combat survivability will improve manifold.
Now, the IAF will be better prepared to detect, identify, and counter enemy radar and missile systems, providing a significant tactical advantage during operations.
Rs. 2,803 Crores: BEL’s Strong Financial Year
With this latest order, BEL’s total orders for the current financial year now stand at ₹2,803 crore. This includes multiple contracts across communication systems, radar technologies, and electronic warfare. The company’s strong order pipeline is a reflection of its technological capabilities and strategic importance in India’s defence manufacturing landscape.
Supporting India’s Defence Vision
The Government of India has been strongly pushing for indigenisation in the defence sector through various initiatives such as:
-
Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)
-
Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP)
-
Make in India for Defence
BEL’s latest achievement is a direct result of this vision, and it further demonstrates how Indian companies can deliver world-class systems that are mission-critical for national security.
Why This Order is a Game Changer
Here’s why this contract stands out:
-
High Value: At ₹2,210 crore, this is one of the biggest defence orders in the current financial year.
-
Advanced Technology: The EW Suite includes cutting-edge tech that is usually imported.
-
Strategic Partnership: It marks another major milestone in the long-standing collaboration between BEL, DRDO, and the Indian Armed Forces.
BEL’s Role in India’s Defence Ecosystem
BEL has been a trusted defence electronics provider for over six decades. Its range of products includes:
