Bengal police caution against communal comparisons over recent criminal incidents

The West Bengal Police have issued a firm warning against attempts to draw parallels between a recent murder in Bangladesh and the lynching of a father-son duo in Murshidabad, stressing that criminal incidents must not be communalised under any circumstances.

The warning comes amid political reactions linking the murder of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh with the April 2025 Murshidabad lynching, which had triggered widespread outrage and investigations within the State.

Police warn of action against communalisation

Senior police officials said that any attempt to use isolated criminal acts to incite communal tensions or spread misinformation would invite strict legal action. According to the police, the two incidents occurred in entirely different contexts and jurisdictions, and drawing parallels between them was misleading and potentially inflammatory.

The police emphasised that law and order issues must be addressed strictly within the framework of evidence and due process, without political or communal overtones.

BJP leaders’ remarks spark controversy

The police warning follows remarks by several BJP leaders, who referred to the Murshidabad lynching while reacting to the murder of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh. These comments, made against the backdrop of cross-border developments, were seen by the State administration as an attempt to link unrelated incidents to provoke communal sentiment.

The Murshidabad case involved the lynching of a father and son in April 2025 and was investigated as a criminal act under Indian law. The Bangladesh murder, police noted, falls under the jurisdiction of Bangladeshi authorities and must be examined independently.
