Bengaluru often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley is facing severe flooding after heavy pre-monsoon rains swept through the city causing widespread waterlogging and disruption. On Monday parts of the southern city received about 100 millimetres or 4 inches of rainfall which is the highest recorded since 2011. This sudden and intense downpour has created major challenges for the city’s residents and businesses alike.

The flooding has tragically resulted in three deaths including a 12-year-old boy and a 35-year-old female employee of a software company named i-Zed whose compound wall collapsed amid the heavy rains. Videos from Bengaluru show commuters wading through knee-deep water and vehicles stranded on waterlogged roads. Floodwaters have even entered residential homes in several areas causing damage to property and disrupting normal life.

Authorities have put the city on high alert as more rains are forecast due to cyclonic activity over the Andaman Sea. The Bengaluru city corporation has identified 210 flood-prone zones where efforts are ongoing round the clock to manage the situation and restore normalcy. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged citizens not to panic and reassured that work is underway to tackle the flooding issues.

However the crisis has stirred political controversy with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the ruling Congress-led state government of poor planning and inadequate infrastructure despite large budget allocations. BJP has demanded an immediate release of 10 billion rupees approximately 117 million US dollars for flood relief operations. The state government defended itself citing that flooding and drainage issues have been long-standing problems neglected by successive administrations.

Experts attribute the recurrent flooding in Bengaluru partly to rapid urbanisation unplanned construction on lakes and wetlands and insufficient urban drainage systems. These factors combined with heavy rains have overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure. Social media platforms are flooded with criticism highlighting Bengaluru’s crumbling roads poor drainage and the urgent need for sustainable city planning and better disaster preparedness.

As Bengaluru grapples with this latest flood crisis it highlights the growing challenges faced by rapidly expanding urban centres in India balancing development with climate resilience and infrastructure upgrades. The situation remains dynamic as authorities monitor weather forecasts and intensify flood management efforts to protect lives and property in this crucial technology hub of India.
