In a significant leadership change, SJVN Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the joint ownership of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, has announced the appointment of Shri Bhupendra Gupta as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) on an additional charge basis. This decision was formalised via an order from the Ministry of Power dated 2nd May 2025, in line with Regulation 30 of SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

CMD Appointment Effective From 1st May 2025

The appointment is effective from 01 May 2025 for a period of three months, or until a full-time incumbent is appointed, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. This temporary but critical assignment underscores the strategic importance of leadership continuity at SJVN as it continues to spearhead hydro and renewable energy projects across India and neighbouring regions.

Background of Bhupendra Gupta

Shri Bhupendra Gupta, who has now taken charge at SJVN, currently serves as the Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited (THDCIL) since 9th June 2023. He brings with him an impressive and diverse experience of over 32 years, out of which nearly 29 years have been spent in the power sector. His expertise spans project execution, planning, design, contract and project management, and operations and maintenance of large-scale hydropower, transmission, and distribution projects.

Before his role at THDCIL, he held the position of Director (Technical) at Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan. Prior to that, he served as the Operational Head and Additional CEO in two subsidiaries of REC Limited, namely REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd.

Strong SJVN Connection and Technical Foundation

Interestingly, Shri Gupta's association with SJVN goes back a long way. Before his move to REC Ltd. in 2007, he had worked for 12 years in SJVN, playing a critical role in the Planning, Erection, and Commissioning of the Electro-mechanical Equipment of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, which remains India’s largest operational hydroelectric project. His international exposure includes a 3-year deputation in Bhutan (2002–2005), where he contributed to the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project, enhancing his regional project management credibility.

Academic Qualifications

Shri Gupta holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management, giving him a well-rounded perspective of both technical and managerial responsibilities essential for navigating large-scale power sector enterprises.

Regulatory Compliance and Transparency

As per the official communication sent to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the company clarified that Shri Bhupendra Gupta is not related to any board member and is not debarred by SEBI or any other authority from holding the office of Director. This declaration ensures regulatory transparency and corporate governance standards as expected under SEBI’s Listing Regulations.

Relieving of Shri Raj Kumar Chaudhary

Consequent to this appointment, Shri Raj Kumar Chaudhary (DIN: 10198931), who was earlier holding the additional charge of the CMD position, has ceased to hold that responsibility. His interim leadership during the transitional phase is acknowledged, and this marks a smooth baton-passing to the new CMD.

What This Means for SJVN

This appointment comes at a time when SJVN is aggressively pursuing its energy capacity expansion goals, particularly in renewable energy segments such as solar and wind power, along with continuing its hydroelectric dominance. The company has been actively involved in multiple international collaborations, including projects in Nepal and Bhutan, making an experienced leader like Shri Gupta, with deep regional and sectoral insights, a strategic fit.

Market and Investor Confidence

Given his rich track record and technical credentials, Shri Gupta’s leadership is expected to reinforce investor confidence and provide operational momentum for the company’s ambitious projects. Moreover, his earlier association with SJVN and projects of national and international significance positions him well to understand internal dynamics while steering the organisation forward.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Power’s decision to entrust Shri Bhupendra Gupta with the additional charge of CMD at SJVN Limited marks a well-calculated leadership transition at a pivotal moment in India’s energy infrastructure development. His technical acumen, leadership in multi-national projects, and prior experience with SJVN itself are expected to add strategic value to the company’s roadmap. The industry and stakeholders alike will be closely watching how his leadership unfolds in the coming months.
