Despite media reports, government has not confirmed any retirement move or political entry by Siddharth, keeping political chatter unresolved.
Dr. S. Siddharth, the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Bihar Education Department, has categorically refuted claims that he has applied for voluntary retirement (VRS). The clarification from Siddharth comes at a time when media reports and social media posts have widely circulated the possibility of his early retirement, allegedly to pave the way for a political career within the Janata Dal United (JDU) ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.
The rumour mill was set into motion when unverified news emerged on July 17, suggesting that Siddharth had filed for VRS citing personal reasons. Adding fuel to the fire, it was also reported that the senior IAS officer was eyeing a JDU ticket from a reserved constituency, possibly in Nawada or Gaya district. These areas have a significant OBC and Dalit voter base, aligning with the Nitish Kumar government's apparent strategy to broaden its electoral appeal.
Denial from Siddharth
Siddharth promptly quashed the reports, calling them “baseless and speculative.” He clarified that no such VRS application has been submitted and that he continues to serve in his various current capacities. Siddharth is not only the ACS of the Education Department, but also the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, the Director of the Aviation Directorate, and Director of the LN Mishra Institute. His multifaceted administrative responsibilities underscore the importance of his presence within the current government machinery.
His denial has put an end, at least temporarily, to the growing political chatter that he was planning to transition from bureaucracy to politics, a route several senior officers have taken in the past. Sources close to the government have also echoed that no official confirmation regarding any retirement has been issued by the Bihar government.
Political Significance and Speculations
The timing of these rumours is crucial, as Bihar is headed for elections in 2025. Several senior bureaucrats have been speculated to enter politics, and Siddharth’s proximity to CM Nitish Kumar made him a prime subject for such speculations. Some reports had suggested that his inclusion as a JDU candidate could help strengthen the party’s standing among marginalized communities, particularly the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs), which have been the core electoral base for Nitish Kumar.
Political analysts believe that if Siddharth were to indeed enter politics, it would significantly alter the internal dynamics of the JDU, as he is perceived to be a technocrat with deep administrative insight and close ideological alignment with Nitish Kumar’s governance style. However, Siddharth’s recent denial has quelled the excitement—at least for now.
Siddharth’s Administrative Contributions
Dr. S. Siddharth has had a noteworthy career marked by key contributions in Bihar’s education reforms. As Principal Secretary of the Education Department, he introduced:
-
Model schools aimed at improving learning outcomes in rural and semi-urban areas
-
Structured teacher training modules to upgrade the pedagogical skills of government school teachers
-
An online grievance redressal system, which was the first of its kind in the state to bring transparency to complaints raised by teachers and students alike
However, his tenure was not free from controversy. His strict stance on teacher transfers, implementation of disciplinary policies, and efforts to curb irregularities in school management often attracted criticism. Yet, his reform-driven leadership style has been acknowledged across administrative circles.
Past Bomb Threats Heighten State Sensitivities
Interestingly, this clarification comes just days after another high-profile incident—the Gujarat Chief Minister's Office and Secretariat received a hoax bomb threat, as did Ahmedabad Airport. While these incidents are unrelated to Siddharth directly, they underscore the sensitive political atmosphere in which rumours and misinformation can rapidly spread, especially involving high-ranking officials.
Social Media Buzz and Public Perception
The viral nature of the VRS rumour on social media platforms indicates the public’s growing interest in bureaucrats turning politicians. Some saw Siddharth’s supposed retirement as a sign of political ambition, while others criticized the media for spreading unverified information. His swift response and the lack of any official confirmation from the state government helped contain the narrative.
However, the incident highlights the growing interplay between bureaucracy and politics in Bihar, where senior officers often transition into political roles with party support. If Siddharth eventually decides to make such a move, his administrative credibility and alignment with Nitish Kumar would make him a significant political asset.
The JDU’s Larger Strategy
JDU’s electoral calculations ahead of the 2025 elections appear focused on realigning caste equations, improving governance credentials, and possibly projecting technocrats like Siddharth as clean, reform-minded candidates. However, without Siddharth’s official induction or retirement, such strategies remain speculative.
There is also speculation that the rumours were floated deliberately to test public and political response to Siddharth’s possible candidature. If that’s true, the enthusiastic media and public reaction may embolden the JDU to consider him seriously for the political plunge in the near future.
Conclusion
At present, Dr. S. Siddharth remains firmly within the bureaucratic establishment, holding multiple key positions under the Bihar government. His categorical denial of the VRS rumours has put an end to current political speculations, but the possibility of a future transition into politics cannot be completely ruled out given his close association with CM Nitish Kumar and the JDU’s evolving election strategy.
For now, Siddharth continues to serve in administrative roles, focused on education reform, aviation regulation, and CM-level governance support, reaffirming his commitment to public service over political ambition—at least officially.
