Bihar witnessed intense protests recently as BPSC aspirants gathered at Gardanibagh, Patna, demanding a re-examination of the BPSC 70th Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) prelims, held on December 13, 2024. The ongoing protests, which started on December 18, have led to heightened tensions in the region, with Bihar Police coming under scrutiny after a lathi charge on protesters on the night of December 25, 2024.
In a statement, Bihar Police clarified that they had used “mild force” to disperse the gathering, ensuring that no injuries were sustained during the incident. The protests, primarily led by BPSC aspirants, had escalated to a point where hundreds of students surrounded the BPSC office, creating significant law and order issues. The DSP Anu Kumari of Patna pointed out that the students had caused public inconvenience by holding illegal protests without prior permission.
The Bihar Police further accused coaching institute teachers of instigating the protesters. They claimed that these teachers were directly and indirectly inciting students to protest, further fueled by misleading social media accounts. According to DSP Kumari, the authorities are actively investigating the involvement of these social media handles and individuals accused of spreading misinformation to agitate the students.
The protest reached a boiling point when, on December 23, one of the protesters reportedly vandalized a hospital in the area, adding to the mounting tensions. In response, the police filed an FIR at Gardanibagh Police Station against those responsible for the vandalism and instigation. Additionally, notices are being sent to individuals involved in the protest, and further legal action is expected.
Despite the police's stance, the incident has attracted significant political attention. Congress condemned the police action, calling it an unnecessary use of force against peaceful protesters. In a show of solidarity, independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, has announced plans for a Bihar bandh on January 1, 2025, should the BPSC prelims not be cancelled as demanded by the protesters.
Meanwhile, the BPSC has urged aspirants not to be misled by rumors and misinformation, stressing that preparations for the CCE Mains exam are already underway. The commission has indicated that the Mains examination is expected to be held in April 2025, and candidates are encouraged to focus on their studies instead of being swayed by the protests or confusion around the prelims results.
The unfolding situation in Patna highlights the growing discontent among BPSC aspirants and the role of social media in stirring unrest. As Bihar Police continues to monitor the situation, the political ramifications of the protest and the subsequent police action are likely to shape public discourse in the coming weeks.
