What's covered under the Article:

  • BJP launches a strong offensive against Congress over its leaders' remarks and past failures in handling terror threats from Pakistan.

  • Cites examples ranging from Nehru’s Kashmir policy to Indira Gandhi’s Punjab crisis and UPA-era terror attacks.

  • BJP highlights Modi government's decisive actions like surgical and air strikes post-Uri and Pulwama attacks, contrasting them with Congress's past.

In an ongoing political battle over how to handle terrorism and national security, the BJP has sharply criticized Congress for its historical approach to terror-related issues. BJP spokespersons have been vocal in drawing comparisons between past Congress mistakes and the actions of the current Modi government, particularly in terms of addressing Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism.

One of the key accusations revolves around Congress’s handling of Pakistan-related issues over decades. The BJP has pointed to Congress's failure to take firm action when required, notably during the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru. A post shared by the BJP’s social media handle on X criticized Nehru for his approach during the 1947 Kashmir conflict, which included internationalizing the issue at the UN instead of directly confronting Pakistan. The BJP also accused Nehru of neglecting military preparedness, which allegedly contributed to India’s defeat in the 1962 Sino-Indian War. According to the BJP, these historical mistakes set a precedent for Congress’s continued failure to act decisively on terror.

The BJP also raised concerns over the legacy of Indira Gandhi, particularly during the Punjab insurgency of the 1980s. The party accused her of playing with fire by supporting separatist groups like those led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale for political gain, only to see them turn against the nation. They further criticized Congress for its handling of prisoners of war post-1971, claiming that the release of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers failed to secure long-term peace or address Pakistan’s terror infrastructure.

Moreover, the BJP highlighted Congress's ineffectiveness in addressing terror attacks during its last tenure, especially between 2004 and 2014. Among the numerous incidents listed were the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Samjhauta Express blast, and other major terror events. The BJP claimed that during this period, terror incidents skyrocketed to 7,200, with no significant retaliation or justice for the victims.

In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the BJP has been quick to remind the public of its own firm stance on terrorism. They contrasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive actions, such as the surgical strikes in Uri and the retaliation in Balakot, with what they described as Congress’s historically weak responses. A graphic shared by the BJP illustrated how, under Modi’s leadership, India has become more proactive in addressing cross-border terrorism, positioning the Prime Minister’s actions as a stark contrast to Congress’s approach.

The controversy intensified when Congress members, such as Ajay Rai and Charanjeet Singh Channi, made provocative comments about Pakistan, drawing sharp rebukes from the BJP. Despite directives from Congress leadership to maintain discipline, some members continued to make statements that the BJP interpreted as sympathetic to Pakistan or undermining national security. In a further escalation, the Congress party’s official social media handles were involved in a controversy when a post depicted PM Modi as "Gaayab" (absent) during a critical time of national mourning, following the Pahalgam attack.

The BJP capitalized on the opportunity to remind the Congress of its previous missteps. They pointed out that while the Congress leadership has claimed to advocate for national unity, its past actions — including “delays, denials, and dangerous politics” — had cost India thousands of lives. BJP officials stressed that, under the current government, terrorists now understand that there is a price to pay for their actions, with immediate retaliation becoming a hallmark of Modi’s leadership.

This ongoing war of words between the BJP and Congress highlights the growing divide over national security and Pakistan's role in fostering terrorism. As the debate intensifies, the BJP seeks to gain the upper hand by framing Congress as inept and disorganized, particularly in the sensitive area of handling terrorism. The stakes remain high, with both parties seeking to define themselves as the true protectors of national security.
