In a troubling development following the Murshidabad riots, the BJP has alleged that the West Bengal police harassed the bereaved family of the riot victims, trying to forcibly return them to Murshidabad despite their ongoing trauma. The violence, which erupted in April 2025 in the Shamsherganj, Dhulian, Suti, and Jangipur regions of Murshidabad, resulted in the deaths of Harogobind Das and his son Chandan Das. The tragic incident occurred during protests related to the newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act. The police's handling of the violence has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and dignity of the affected communities.
The Incident: Police Harassment and Forced Return
According to Amit Malviya, the BJP IT cell head, the police action was an attempt to cover up their earlier inaction during the riots. He claimed that the victims’ family, which had fled to Bidhannagar in Kolkata to seek refuge, was harassed by the police. Malviya accused the West Bengal police, under Mamata Banerjee's leadership, of acting in a manner worse than Hitler’s Gestapo. He alleged that the police, without a warrant, broke into the rented house where only two widows, other female relatives, and young children were present.
In a shocking turn of events, Malviya claimed that the police tried to forcibly take the grieving family back to Murshidabad, despite their ongoing emotional distress and the lack of a proper investigation into the murders of Harogobind and Chandan Das. This act has sparked outrage within the BJP, which has consistently supported the victims' family in the aftermath of the violence.
BJP’s Intervention and Legal Support
The situation escalated when BJP leaders and legal representatives arrived at the scene to intervene. Malviya stated that the police fled after their presence was made known, preventing further injustice to the already vulnerable family. The intervention was hailed as crucial in ensuring that the family received justice and protection from the authorities.
“Had the BJP not intervened, this vulnerable Hindu family might have suffered further injustice—this time at the hands of the very forces meant to protect them,” Malviya added. He also criticized the Trinamool Congress for attempting to politically align itself with the victims despite their earlier inaction, claiming the party falsely portrayed the deceased as their supporters.
Opposition Condemnation
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, who demanded accountability from the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to ensure the safety and dignity of the citizens, especially those affected by targeted violence. Adhikari emphasized that the family of the victims rejected compensation offered by the West Bengal government, citing ideological differences and dissatisfaction with the state administration’s handling of the riots.
“The tragic deaths of Harogobinda Das and Chandan Das in Jafarabad, Samsherganj, Murshidabad, are a heartbreaking reminder of the fragile safety of our Sanatani community in West Bengal,” Adhikari said on X. He further condemned the breaking of the guest house where the family was staying, allegedly by the Kolkata police, and called the police actions a blatant violation of justice and compassion.
A Call for CBI Inquiry
The family has also been seeking a CBI inquiry into the deaths of their loved ones, fearing that local authorities might not conduct a fair investigation. They are taking their case to the Calcutta High Court, seeking legal recourse for a thorough probe into the incident.
Adhikari emphasized that trust cannot be achieved through force or suppression, but through accountability and empathy. He criticized the government for using heavy-handed tactics in dealing with the victims and stressed the need for peace and reconciliation instead of fostering division and distrust.
The Murshidabad Riot Aftermath
The violence in Murshidabad led to the deaths of at least three people, with several others left injured. Over 100 houses were damaged, and the unrest sparked a statewide security review. Over 300 arrests have been made in connection with the riots, and a Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the incidents.
The growing political divide in the state has exacerbated tensions, with both the BJP and Trinamool Congress accusing each other of exploiting the situation for political gain. However, for the families of the victims, the focus remains on seeking justice, rather than engaging in political battles.
Final Thoughts
The harassment faced by the victim's family in Kolkata highlights the turbulent political atmosphere in West Bengal, where police inaction during the Murshidabad riots is now being followed by harassment of those affected. As the BJP continues to support the family in their quest for justice, this incident is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for safety, dignity, and accountability in the state.
