Guwahati, July 9, 2025: Senior Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Assam government of systematically eroding the autonomy of tribal councils in the state, warning that the move would undermine local self-governance and threaten the unique cultural identities of Assam’s tribal communities.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was centralising powers in the state government at the expense of constitutionally mandated autonomous councils that represent tribal and indigenous communities.
“The BJP government is intent on stripping Assam’s tribal councils of their autonomy, ignoring the constitutional provisions and the historic demands of our tribal brothers and sisters,” Gogoi charged.
He cited recent administrative changes and policy decisions that he claimed had reduced the councils’ decision-making powers and budgetary independence, effectively placing them under tighter state control.
Gogoi argued that these moves were part of a broader pattern of centralisation and authoritarianism by the BJP both at the Centre and in states it governs.
“This is not just about Assam. Wherever BJP is in power, they weaken local institutions and suppress democratic voices,” the Congress MP said.
He also appealed to the people of Assam to resist the erosion of tribal councils’ powers, warning that the loss of autonomy would harm development goals and cultural preservation.
The Assam government has denied such accusations in the past, saying reforms are aimed at improving efficiency and accountability in tribal councils’ functioning.
The issue has become a political flashpoint in the state, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of undermining Assam’s diverse social fabric in pursuit of tighter control.
