What’s covered under the Article:

  • BJP is reportedly planning to contest the BMC polls solo, ending alliance speculation with regional partners including Shiv Sena factions.

  • Poonam Mahajan is likely to be named the new Mumbai BJP president as part of a broader reshuffle before local body elections.

  • Multiple meetings between Amit Shah and Fadnavis in Delhi finalised the change in strategy and leadership structure for Maharashtra polls.

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly planning to contest the polls solo, without any alliance partners. According to top party sources, this strategic shift is part of a broader recalibration aimed at strengthening the BJP’s independent footprint in urban Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai.

The party is also expected to announce leadership changes in its Mumbai unit, with Poonam Mahajan emerging as the frontrunner to replace Ashish Shelar as the Mumbai BJP president. Mahajan, a senior leader and former Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central, is tipped to take over as the face of the BJP in the city ahead of the civic polls. Other names that were reportedly considered include Ameet Satam and Pravin Darekar, but Mahajan’s experience and prominence in Mumbai’s political scene appear to have tilted the scales in her favour.

The potential decision to go solo was reportedly cemented following a series of closed-door meetings in Delhi between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The deliberations were aimed at finalising both strategic and organisational changes that would better position the BJP in the upcoming local body elections across Maharashtra, with a key focus on Mumbai.

Strategy Shift Ahead of BMC Polls

The BMC elections—which are among the most high-profile civic body elections in India—are expected to be held within the next four months, following a Supreme Court directive. The BJP had previously fought these elections in alliance with regional players like the Shiv Sena. However, the current Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP group—may not remain intact for the local body elections, at least not in Mumbai.

Sources indicate that the BJP leadership has decided to test its own strength in urban pockets, especially in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), where the party believes it has cultivated a robust voter base. Going solo could allow the BJP to avoid seat-sharing conflicts and retain autonomy in candidate selection, campaign messaging, and booth-level management.

A senior BJP functionary said, “The party is confident of contesting on its own in Mumbai. The decision is strategic and takes into account ground-level feedback from workers and voters.”

Poonam Mahajan Likely to Lead Mumbai BJP

Poonam Mahajan, daughter of late BJP stalwart Pramod Mahajan, is expected to bring fresh energy and a youth-oriented appeal to the party’s Mumbai unit. Having previously served as the national president of the BJP Yuva Morcha, Mahajan is seen as a dynamic leader with deep roots in the city’s political and cultural fabric.

Party insiders believe that appointing her would signal generational change and provide a new narrative for the BJP’s urban voter outreach, especially among youth, women, and first-time voters. Her likely appointment also suggests that the party is positioning itself for an aggressive and modern campaign in Mumbai’s civic polls.

She is expected to take over from Ashish Shelar, who has served multiple terms as Mumbai BJP chief and has been instrumental in expanding the party’s influence across various wards. However, with the upcoming polls expected to see a higher degree of polarisation and competition, especially with rival factions of the Shiv Sena and the Congress-NCP alliance gearing up, the BJP appears keen on projecting a new face.

Final Round of Talks Underway

Sources said that Ashish Shelar, who recently returned to Mumbai from Delhi, is expected to be consulted before the formal announcement is made. This final round of discussions could take place within the next couple of days, after which Mahajan’s appointment could be officially declared by the BJP’s central leadership.

Reports from News18 Marathi suggest that Devendra Fadnavis remains in Delhi, engaged in further high-level consultations not just about the Mumbai BJP leadership, but also broader political and developmental decisions concerning Maharashtra’s governance model under the Mahayuti government.

The developments come at a crucial time when opposition parties are sharpening their attacks, and internal alliance dynamics within the Mahayuti coalition remain tense. By choosing to fight alone, the BJP seems to be sending out a strong message: it is ready to assert its individual political muscle, even at the cost of temporary electoral risks.

What It Means for Mumbai and Maharashtra Politics

The upcoming BMC elections are expected to act as a litmus test for all major political parties in Maharashtra, especially in the aftermath of intense political realignments over the past year. The Shiv Sena split, the NCP’s vertical division, and the Congress's push to stay relevant in urban Maharashtra all make this election a multi-cornered contest.

For the BJP, going solo means it must mobilise resources, recalibrate outreach, and work closely with its booth-level workers across all 227 wards of the BMC. But it also means that the party won't have to compromise on ideological or operational matters, something it has reportedly found difficult in recent alliance negotiations.

If Poonam Mahajan takes charge, her leadership could redefine the BJP’s urban strategy, with greater emphasis on social media mobilisation, urban issues like infrastructure and housing, and targeted outreach programs. She is also expected to play a key role in candidate selection and campaign planning once the civic poll schedule is announced.
