A fresh political controversy has emerged in India’s national politics after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised serious allegations regarding the foreign travel expenses of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. • In 2018–19, income was ₹1.22 crore and expenditure on foreign visits was ₹3.9 crore.
• In 2019–20, income reportedly stood at ₹1.39 crore while expenses were ₹4.6 crore.
• In 2021–22, income was ₹1.03 crore with alleged travel spending of ₹2.6 crore.

The BJP claims that these figures indicate a consistent mismatch between declared income and travel-related expenditure.

Assets growth and affidavit reference

The BJP leader also referred to electoral affidavit data submitted by Rahul Gandhi over the years. According to these claims, Gandhi’s declared assets were around ₹55.58 lakh when he first contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2004.

In his latest affidavit submitted for the 2024 elections, his declared assets are reported to have increased to approximately ₹21 crore. The BJP has pointed to this rise as part of its broader argument demanding greater public clarity on financial disclosures.
