The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged Delhi LG VK Saxena to cancel the merger of four government properties with 'Sheesh Mahal,' the former official residence of Arvind Kejriwal during his tenure as Delhi Chief Minister from 2015 to October 2024.
BJP has long used the 'Sheesh Mahal' controversy to target Kejriwal over alleged corruption and misuse of public funds. Newly elected BJP MLA Virendra Gupta formally wrote to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, demanding the reversal of the property amalgamation that led to the bungalow’s expansion.
'Sheesh Mahal': The Expansion Controversy
The bungalow’s expansion was reportedly achieved by merging four government-owned properties, raising serious concerns about its legality and ethical justification. According to Gupta, Kejriwal annexed:
- Eight Type-V flats at 45 and 47 Rajpur Road
- Two government bungalows at 8-A and 8-B Flag Staff Road
- The original CM residence at 6, Flagstaff Road
This expanded the premises to over 50,000 square meters, far exceeding the space of a standard official residence.
Gupta, who was Leader of Opposition in the 7th Delhi Assembly, accused Kejriwal of turning a government bungalow into an "ultra-luxurious Sheesh Mahal" with extravagant interiors and high-end fixtures.
BJP's Demands: Reverse Merger & Repurpose Land
Gupta emphasized that the next BJP Chief Minister of Delhi will not reside in the bungalow, as it is under investigation for financial irregularities. Instead, the BJP wants the merged properties to be demerged and repurposed for government quarters or other official use.
In his letter to LG Saxena, Gupta stated:
"I urgently request your intervention to restore these properties to their original independent status and return 6, Flag Staff Road to its previous area of less than 10,000 square meters."
BJP’s Political Attack on Kejriwal
The BJP heavily criticized Kejriwal during the Delhi Assembly elections, frequently highlighting alleged corruption linked to the 'Sheesh Mahal' renovations. The party accused him of:
- Spending public money on extravagant renovations
- Illegally expanding government property for personal use
- Violating rules on official CM residences
Gupta’s letter to the LG strengthens the BJP’s case against Kejriwal, reinforcing the party’s demand for accountability and legal action.
BJP Seeks Expedited Probe
Besides demanding the reversal of the merger, Gupta also urged the LG to expedite the ongoing investigation into these alleged violations. He stated that swift action is necessary to restore public trust in government institutions.
"The BJP will ensure that those responsible for misusing government resources face accountability," he added.
What’s Next?
With Delhi's political landscape shifting following Kejriwal’s resignation in October 2024, the BJP is expected to further scrutinize AAP’s governance and pursue legal actions related to 'Sheesh Mahal' and other corruption allegations.
