Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' space exploration company, has reached a major milestone with its New Glenn reusable rocket, setting the stage for its long-awaited maiden flight. Named after astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, the New Glenn rocket completed a critical hotfire test at Cape Canaveral, Florida, igniting its seven engines for 24 seconds.
This test represents the final significant step before launch. The rocket has also been granted a commercial space launch license by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), allowing Blue Origin to conduct orbital missions from Cape Canaveral with the reusable first stage landing on an Atlantic barge.
Hotfire Test Success
The hotfire test, conducted at Cape Canaveral, involved firing all seven engines of the New Glenn launch vehicle while secured to the pad. This test demonstrated the rocket’s readiness for its maiden flight, set to mark a new era in space exploration for Blue Origin.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp expressed gratitude toward the FAA, stating, "A big thanks to the FAA for the partnership, especially over the holidays. Here’s to NG-1—we are really close, folks."
FAA’s Five-Year License
The FAA license, valid for five years, permits Blue Origin to carry out orbital missions, provided the reusable first stage lands on a barge in the Atlantic. FAA official Kelvin B. Coleman praised the collaboration with Blue Origin, ensuring all safety, environmental, and technical requirements were met well in advance of the scheduled flight.
What is New Glenn?
New Glenn is designed to be a reusable rocket, reducing the costs of space missions while enabling frequent launches. It’s part of Blue Origin’s vision of creating a "road to space for the benefit of Earth."
