Boeing has appointed Robert “Kelly” Ortberg as its next President and CEO as the company continues to face widening losses. This leadership change comes at a critical time for Boeing, which is struggling with both its commercial airplane and defense programs.

Here are five things to know about Boeing's new CEO, Robert Ortberg:

Education and Career

Robert “Kelly” Ortberg studied mechanical engineering at the University of Iowa. The 64-year-old began his career as an engineer at Texas Instruments in 1983 before moving to Rockwell Collins in 1987 as a program manager, where he spent over 30 years. According to the Washington Post, he became the CEO of Rockwell Collins in 2013.

CEO of Collins Aerospace

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kelly Ortberg is currently the CEO of Collins Aerospace, a United Technologies Company created in 2018 by merging UTC Aerospace Systems and Rockwell Collins. The company boasts about $23 billion in annual sales and employs 70,000 people worldwide.

Previous Roles

Ortberg previously served as executive vice president and COO of the company’s Government Systems business from 2010 to 2012 and COO of its Commercial Systems business from 2006 to 2010.

Major Acquisitions and Industry Impact

Kelly Ortberg led Rockwell Collins through the two largest acquisitions in the company's history: the purchase of B/E Aerospace in 2017 and ARINC in 2013. His leadership also secured high-profile program wins in the aerospace and defense industries, earning the company a place on the Fortune 500 list.

Awards and Recognition

During Ortberg’s tenure, Rockwell Collins received numerous awards, including being named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute and Forbes' designation as one of America’s Best Large Employers. In 2017, Ortberg won the Highest Rated CEO award by Glassdoor.

Despite this leadership change, Boeing is still expected to report losses in the current quarter. Recent reports indicate that the company has reported a wider quarterly loss and slightly lower revenue than expected, as its commercial airplane and defense programs continue to struggle.
