In a major security development from Himachal Pradesh, the Kullu district was put on high alert on Friday, May 2, 2025, following a bomb threat received through email. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) confirmed that the threat email mentioned multiple target locations, including government offices and public places, to be attacked within the next 24 hours. The seriousness of the threat has led to an immediate response from the authorities.
According to an official statement by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the DDMA, all security and emergency services have been mobilized, and key establishments across the Kullu district are now being monitored closely. Police units, disaster response teams, and specialized bomb detection squads, including sniffer dog units, have been deployed in sensitive areas across the district.
This alarming threat comes on the heels of a similar incident last month when bomb threat emails were received at the offices of Deputy Commissioners (DC) in Chamba and Hamirpur. Those threats disrupted official operations for an entire day, leading to evacuations and intensive search operations, although no explosives were ultimately found in either case.
Following the protocol, in the previous incidents in Chamba and Hamirpur, DC offices were evacuated, and all incoming and outgoing movements were halted as security personnel thoroughly combed the area. In both locations, bomb squads aided by canine units conducted detailed inspections of the premises. Thankfully, the threats were found to be false alarms, but the incidents left the local administration on edge.
Hamirpur DC Amarjeet Singh, who dealt with the earlier threat, had stated, “The threat was taken seriously, and the police were instructed to investigate thoroughly.” The sentiment resonates strongly in Kullu today, as the authorities brace for any possibility, unwilling to take chances with public safety.
The bomb threat email to the Kullu district did not specify exact targets but hinted at multiple sites, which has led the administration to tighten security in areas with heavy footfall, such as bus terminals, government buildings, and popular marketplaces. Schools and other institutions have also been advised to remain cautious, and the public has been urged to report any suspicious activity or unattended objects immediately.
The Kullu Police Department, in coordination with the state-level intelligence and cybersecurity cells, has initiated a detailed investigation into the origin of the email. Cybercrime experts are currently analyzing the sender’s email address, IP data, and possible digital trails to trace the source. Initial reports suggest the possibility of a hoax similar to last month, but the district administration is not ruling out any angle and is proceeding with full caution.
Officials have reiterated that the safety of citizens is the top priority, and the entire administrative machinery has been activated to deal with any potential emergency. Teams are conducting random checks, and patrols have been increased in vulnerable areas, especially around government offices and key infrastructure points. Additionally, mobile surveillance units have been deployed to monitor public areas in real time.
Public cooperation has been sought to deal with the current situation. Local authorities have requested residents of Kullu to remain calm but vigilant, avoid spreading rumors, and follow official advisories through verified channels only. Emergency helplines have also been activated for immediate response in case of any suspicious observations.
This incident also raises broader concerns about the increasing frequency of such threats in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, particularly at a time when the tourist season is approaching its peak. Local officials believe such threats—whether hoaxes or genuine—could be aimed at creating panic and disrupting normal life, particularly in peaceful regions like Kullu, which is known for its calm and scenic charm.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has also been put on standby, and mock drills are being planned across the district to ensure readiness in case of any emergency situation. The Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh is expected to review the situation in a high-level meeting later today with inputs from the police, home department, and disaster management teams.
As of now, no explosive materials have been recovered, and the investigations are ongoing. The authorities remain cautious but confident that all necessary measures are in place to safeguard the public.
This is a developing story, and more information will be released as the investigation unfolds. In the meantime, the administration’s message to the citizens is clear: Stay alert, stay safe, and trust the official response mechanism.
