Tyrrell Hatton accidentally swore live on camera after a poor tee shot during the PGA Championship first round in Charlotte.
Commentators reacted quickly, while Sky Sports criticized the language as a bad influence on younger fans.
Hatton showed strong early performance at Quail Hollow, aiming to improve on recent LIV Golf results with hopes for a good tournament week.

Golf fans watching ESPN’s coverage of the PGA Championship 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina, witnessed an unfiltered moment of frustration from British golfer Tyrrell Hatton on May 15 during the first round.

Hatton, who finished the day at 3-under 68, was caught on a live microphone swearing after a disappointing tee shot on the 17th hole. The frustration was clear as he uttered the F-word before the mic could be muted. His exact words were, “That is worst f…” expressing his displeasure at the shot.

Commentator Scott Van Pelt, covering the 18th hole, appeared surprised and quickly shifted focus with a brief “Well… to 18,” before moving on silently. On the other side, Sky Sports commentator Ewen Murray openly criticized the outburst, calling it “a terrible influence on the next generation,” despite being a fan of Hatton’s game.

Despite the incident, Hatton had a strong start at Quail Hollow. He recalled his positive memories of the course where he tied for third place two years ago. He mentioned, “Sure, there’s some tough tee shots, but I’ve been driving the ball well. If I can keep that going, then that should serve me well for the rest of the week.”

Hatton recently joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team this season and has been showing steady progress. After winning the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year, his performances in LIV Golf have been mixed but improving, with recent finishes of T5 in Mexico and T13 in South Korea.

He commented on his goals: “Ultimately, I want to be finishing higher than where I did those two weeks. But I just keep practising on my weeks off and hoping it’ll click on the tournament week. It has felt better this week so far, but we’ve still got a lot of golf left to play. Hopefully, I can keep a good feeling going.
