India’s broadband market is witnessing a major expansion, driven by telecom companies shifting focus from traditional mobility products to broadband services in an effort to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). According to a recent report by recruitment firm TeamLease Services, this shift towards broadband penetration is creating a multitude of new job opportunities within the sector, despite the muted growth in the overall telecom industry.

Currently, India’s wired broadband penetration stands at approximately 13%, but as service providers prioritize broadband services, this figure is expected to climb steadily. TeamLease Services projects an annual growth rate of 9-10% in the broadband market, which will likely generate a variety of job roles across different areas including sales, installation, network maintenance, and customer support.

Increased Demand for Network Operations and Technical Roles

As broadband infrastructure expands, so does the demand for network operations and maintenance professionals. Key roles seeing growth include fibre technicians and Network Operations Centre (NOC) personnel. These technical roles are essential for maintaining the reliability and performance of broadband services, which are crucial for the continuous increase in broadband user base across the country.

This shift has positively impacted salaries in the sector as well. Data from TeamLease Services indicates that the average salary in the broadband sector increased by 3.18% during the period from March to August 2023 compared to the preceding six months. Furthermore, the number of associates has surged by an impressive 47.10%, underscoring the industry’s growing workforce requirements to support this expansion.

Youth-Centric Workforce in the Broadband Sector

The current workforce within the broadband industry is predominantly young, with over 67% of associates falling within the 18 to 30 age range. This reflects a sector that is particularly appealing to younger job seekers looking for stable employment with growth potential. Educational backgrounds among associates reveal that 41.23% hold a bachelor’s degree, while 29.7% have completed their 12th standard, showcasing a diverse workforce in terms of qualifications.

The Role of Broadband in India’s Digital Transformation

The broadband expansion is not only a driver of employment but also a crucial factor in India's larger digital transformation agenda. As broadband penetration improves, it has the potential to increase digital access and connectivity for millions across the country, enhancing sectors such as education, healthcare, and e-commerce. Furthermore, with a high growth projection in the coming years, this expansion in broadband services is set to bolster telecom companies’ ARPU, which has been a key performance indicator in a competitive market environment.
