The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, has recently approved two significant railway projects under the Ministry of Railways, with a total estimated cost of US$ 808.8 million (Rs. 6,798 crore). These projects mark a crucial step toward enhancing connectivity and promoting economic development across the region.
The first project involves the doubling of the Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga and Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur railway sections, covering a total distance of 256 km. This initiative aims to improve the movement of passenger and goods trains, significantly benefiting areas connected to Nepal, northeast India, and various border regions. The project is expected to generate approximately 106 lakh human days of direct employment over the next five years, underscoring its potential impact on local economies.
The second project entails the construction of a new railway line between Errupalem and Namburu via Amaravati, spanning 57 km. This new rail line will connect around 168 villages and serve a population of about 12 lakhs, establishing nine new stations. The increased connectivity will facilitate better access to transportation for residents in these areas, thereby enhancing their socio-economic prospects.
Moreover, the multi-tracking project will specifically benefit two aspirational districts, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur, which together serve approximately 388 villages with a combined population of about nine lakhs. The capacity augmentation works associated with these projects are expected to generate an additional freight traffic of 31 million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), contributing significantly to regional trade and commerce.
These railway initiatives align with the Prime Minister’s vision for a New India and are in harmony with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity. The focus on enhancing infrastructure reflects a commitment to comprehensive development, improving transportation networks, and creating more employment opportunities within the region.
As India continues to invest in its railway infrastructure, these projects are poised to play a pivotal role in transforming the socio-economic landscape, providing essential connectivity, and facilitating growth across various sectors.
