  • CATL’s Shenxing battery offers 520 km range with just 5 minutes of charging, a global record

  • The new sodium-ion batteries promise reduced reliance on lithium, enhanced performance

  • CATL's battery tech outperforms competitors, including BYD and Tesla, in charging speed and low-temperature environments

Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Ltd. (CATL), the world's largest supplier of EV batteries, has announced groundbreaking developments in battery technology that could significantly impact the electric vehicle (EV) industry. On Monday, the company revealed a new battery that claims to have set a global record for superfast charging technology, making major strides in addressing range anxiety and charging convenience for electric vehicles.

CATL's Shenxing Battery Breaks Records

CATL’s second-generation Shenxing battery has reportedly set a new global record by adding 520 km (323 miles) of driving range after just five minutes of charging. This superfast charging technology could revolutionize the EV industry, as it takes almost the same amount of time to charge as it does to refuel a traditional gas-powered car.

The new Shenxing battery surpasses the previous record set by BYD, a Chinese EV giant, which claimed that its charging system could add 400 km of range in about 5 minutes. Although some analysts were skeptical of BYD’s initial claims, particularly due to technical challenges and costs, CATL’s latest breakthrough could prove to be a game-changer if scaled up successfully.

Impact on Competitors: Tesla and Mercedes-Benz

CATL's fast charging capabilities place it ahead of some of the leading Western competitors in the industry. For example, Tesla’s latest superchargers can add up to 270 kilometers of range in 15 minutes, while Mercedes-Benz Group recently announced a battery system that can recharge up to 325 kilometers in 10 minutes.

CATL’s Shenxing battery offers a faster and more efficient charging solution, making it a key player in the EV market for both consumers and automakers seeking to alleviate concerns about the time it takes to charge electric vehicles.

Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery with Enhanced Range

In addition to its superfast charging capabilities, CATL’s Shenxing battery is also touted as the world’s first lithium iron phosphate battery with an 800 km range and a 12C peak charging rate. This innovative battery technology offers a longer driving range while maintaining high charging efficiency. It also performs exceptionally well in low-temperature environments, such as -10°C, outperforming other batteries currently available in the market.

This feature makes it an appealing choice for automakers, especially in regions with colder climates where battery performance typically declines.

Naxtra Series: Sodium-Ion Battery Revolution

On Monday, CATL also unveiled its new Naxtra series of sodium-ion batteries, claiming they will be the world’s first mass-produced sodium-ion batteries. This marks a significant step forward in reducing the industry’s reliance on lithium, which has been facing supply constraints and rising costs. Sodium-ion batteries are a potential game-changer, providing a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

These sodium-ion batteries could help reduce maintenance costs and offer better performance in extreme temperatures, ranging from -40°C to +70°C. The batteries are also seen as highly efficient for use in heavy-duty trucks, with one of the Naxtra batteries reportedly offering over eight years of service life while reducing lifecycle costs compared to traditional lead-acid batteries.

CATL’s Market Performance

Despite the ambitious claims, CATL shares saw a modest increase of 1% on Tuesday following the announcement of these new products. The company’s ability to innovate and lead in battery technology is likely to continue boosting its position in the global EV market.

Conclusion

CATL’s Shenxing battery, with its superfast charging technology and impressive driving range, positions the company as a key competitor in the global electric vehicle sector. Additionally, the Naxtra series and sodium-ion battery technology offer new avenues for EV industry growth, reducing reliance on lithium and providing more cost-efficient solutions. With these innovations, CATL is poised to maintain its leadership role in the battery manufacturing space, potentially revolutionizing how we think about electric vehicle charging and battery sustainability.
